I remember the first time that I read Lord of the Rings it seemed quite clear to me that the world being built by Saruman and to a certain extent Sauron was the actual world I lived in, a world of machinery and pollution, in which the forests are all cut down and slaves work in the factories of the powerful. So at that time I rather assumed that Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf and the rest were actually going to lose the war, leading to the world we now live in. Somewhere in the world that I lived in, Saruman presumably still ran everything, and wore very nice suits.
