"They" being Mohammad Atta and a few other people with box-cutters?
I think you guys were bombing various countries to rubble for stupid reasons long before that.

You attacked Afghanistan instead of Saudi Arabia.

This.
Imagine we lived in a world where the USA had the balls to fight Islamic Fundamentalism by actually attacking it at its source.

And? Are we required to shelter them and deliver food to their shitholes? I dare say not. They can huddle in the burnt-out remains of their homes and eat each other for all I care.

If only the world were that simple, dude. If only one could make a crowd of idiots making unjust demands vanish into dust just by pointing out how silly their demands are.

Bin laden was in A-stan.
We went in and obliterated the AQ and Taliban until they ran to a nuclear state.

We should have left in 2011

If Osama was nice enough to be in his homeland at that point, US could use its pull there to just have him politely delivered to one of the military bases, black bagged. Possibly in pieces, if the local professional disappearers got too enthusiastic.
Alas, he got kicked out from SA as soon as 1991 for his politics.
Bin Laden publicly denounced Saudi dependence on the U.S. forces, arguing that the Quran prohibited non-Muslims from setting foot in the Arabian Peninsula and that two holiest shrines of Islam, Mecca and Medina, the cities in which the prophet Muhammad received and recited Allah's message, should only be defended by Muslims. Bin Laden tried to convince the Saudi ulama to issue a fatwa condemning the American military deployment but senior clerics refused out of fear of repression.[122] Bin Laden's criticism of the Saudi monarchy led them to try to silence him. The U.S. 82nd Airborne Division landed in the north-eastern Saudi city of Dhahran and was deployed in the desert barely 400 miles from Medina.[15]

Meanwhile, on 8 November 1990, the FBI raided the New Jersey home of El Sayyid Nosair, an associate of al-Qaeda operative Ali Mohamed. They discovered copious evidence of terrorist plots, including plans to blow up New York City skyscrapers. This marked the earliest discovery of al-Qaeda terrorist plans outside of Muslim countries.[123] Nosair was eventually convicted in connection to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and later admitted guilt for the murder of Rabbi Meir Kahane in New York City on 5 November 1990.

Move to Sudan

In 1991, bin Laden was expelled from Saudi Arabia by its government after repeatedly criticizing the Saudi alliance with the United States.
It illustrates nicely why USA didn't regime change SA to fight islamism.
What would be the point? The government already supports US policy as much as it can, which, with the quality and power of governments there, sadly isn't much.
Any forced replacement would not be more competent, and most likely have less power.
