...You know, by virtue of "no actual people are getting hurt" this specific thing is probably fine...

The problem of course, is that that's not actually what the meme is referring to at all...

I never explicitly said that this is what this meme was referring to. I said that there is a slippery slope from A to B, not necessarily the very same slippery slope that is shown in the meme.

Old Sagan the Pagan and his fears of people ceasing to believe in "Science".

What he said there isn't actually wrong, but he did not foresee the half of it.
The culture that celebrates the big dumb jock in high school, and laughs at the less athletic kids being bullied is one part of it.
Another - and one he shares some responsibility for - is science being held hostage by people with an anti-religious or other such hostile ideology and agenda. Evolution being used to push Atheism being the obvious example.
And another - the big one we are seeing - is the corruption of science due to it's commercialization. Patented knowledge. And deliberate fraud in order to make more profits.
The pharmaceutical companies on the one hand telling everyone "Trust the Science!" and then changing their story every few months, and on the other... refusing all liability for any medical harm done by their products!
