Some of it is historical as much as racial.
Nazis saw slavs as subhuman, but gave Bandera (a Ukrainian anti-Soviet nationalist) support (for a time) and were...somewhat, to a limited degree...sympathetic to Ukrainian nationalism (generally as a way of getting cannon-fodder recruits to aim at the Soviets, of course). The end-result of this being a division in the SS that was filled by Ukrainians eventually getting 'handed-over' by the Nazis to a fake, end-of-war, Ukrainian national army that was organized and fought...basically for the same reason that the French SS division was organized and fought so much at the end of the day* (getting captured meant they'd be getting firing squaded for treason).
So Azov Battalion somewhat appeals to that nazi-associated mythos...ALONGSIDE of their own variant on Nazi ideology that drops the "Aryan German" bits in favor of a generic 'white' that just so happens to include/venerate slavs.
*The 'end' of this story for the Ukrainian ('Galician') SS division actually being many of them admitted into Canada because they were technically claimed by Poland as citizens (mostly as a fuck-you since this was the government-in-exile the Soviets were...not on good terms with) and thus the Soviets couldn't/didn't just mass-execute them...And thus there's even a memorial in a Canadian graveyard wth many SS veterans in it dedicated to the 14th SS division.

It's an old Nordic sun rune that's been stylized; is another of those things the Nazi's tried to co-opt for their own ideology and has been tainted ever since.
