The woman was so used to dealing with western men (who on the whole treat women like people) that she didn't realize she was dealing with very different men, who actually didn't see her as a person.
Western women are coddled, they don't know or understand the inherent chance for violence that exists between all men, and they don't understand that western men, are actually some of the most pro-women men on the planet.
Only in a society where women are so insulated from consequences and so protected could this lady have thought what she was doing was a good idea.
Hell, thats the only reason this is even in the news, if a guy had picked a fight with ten other men and gotten beat down it would struggle to get coverage on a slow news day.
And of course it is far more likely to happen to a man than a woman. Because men are the demographic most likely to be the victims of violent crime.

And while I do find the fact that she actually went and started a fistfight with 10 men to defend her partner's honor very brave, I also consider it so stupid that I'd nominate her for a Darwin Award if she hadn't survived. Nothing ironic about it, most of your supposed rivalry seems to be just performative. It's natural for two very similar people to share the same views.
Of course, it's also worth noting that the Irish middle class don't have the same docile attitude towards authority that most of Europe does. And it's the middle class that's most important in these culture war issues.
