Speaking of which: Guess which old kids' show they're rebooting next year? :rolleyes:

That doesn't even work with Roman numerals and all of it is wrong. That's Randall Munroe - the author of xkcd - trolling idiots.
No, its correct.

In the image, substitute the 1s for Is, the 5s for Vs, and the 10 for an X, and the math all adds up.

I + I = II
II + II = IV
IV + V = IX
Or...
1 + 1 = 2
2 + 2 = 4
4 + 5 = 9

So for example, 46 in Roman numerals would be XLVI, which would be 105051 under his system of translating numerals to numbers.

The Romans did not have the addition sign or the equal sign. They literally wrote out plus and et instead. As for the concept of zero and decimal places? Those didn't reach Europe until after Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi invented algebra in the 9th century AD.

Something like these ...

Ve = sqrt[2H/M] * sqrt[1 - (Pe/Pc)^(R/Cp)]
Ve = sqrt[2(Hc-He)/M], η = (Hc-He)/Hc

... which are solveable by hand, by the way, would have been completely beyond what a Roman mathematician could handle.

The only things a Roman mathematician would recognize about those two monsters are the upper case letters and the greek η. He also wouldn't know what any of it means.

Yes, I know. Its also completely irrelevant to the joke made by xkcd.

Seriously, its not that complicated, he just substituted Roman numerals with what their equivalent Arabic numeral would be, but then still performed the math as though they were Roman numerals.
