Free Speech and (Big Tech) Censorship Thread

Not yet. CNN Brazil released an article today saying that Twitter will comply with the STF-imposed orders(that is, Musk surrenders), but so far they are the only ones saying that. We'll find out whether it's true or not soon.

Ukraine doing the smart thing and making Telegram use forbidden by state officials and military members, outside official duties.

Bet France showed them all the FSB backdoors built into the app, and that changed the UA gov's tolerance for the platform.

eh. FSB backdoors?
but it is open source:
Is the open source portion perhaps incomplete? with some hidden closed source components I am not aware of?

the founder is russian. but he escaped russia in 2013 after supporting anti-putin protestors. and is currently a citizen of france and UAE.

interestingly, telegram legal headquarters is in british virgin island, but actual physical headquarters is in dubai.

"Escaped Russia" dude went back like 50 times since then

That's the client.
Is the server software open source too?

Also apparently his story of "escaping" Russia stinks, which adds to the questions about what's the deal:

That's the client.
Is the server software open source too?
Apparently not. which is a huge red flag.
But, having the client source is enough to verify certain things, like end to end encryption which prevents the server from decrypting it even if it wanted to...

... but, further looking into it, only "secret messages" are encrypted.
Using secret mode restricts various features (as it should, because many convenience features literally cannot work if the company cannot open and read your messages. but I get the feeling they might artifically inflate the amount of restrictions to push people into using non secure mode).

Thus vast majority of communication is done via regular mode. which gives the telegram full access to all the data. to do with what they please and share with whom they please.

This makes it only slightly better than whatsapp in that:
1. they don't lie and claim everything is end-to-end encrypted. they admit they have access to regular messages.
2. the client being open source means it most likely does not have a backdoor into your device. unlike closed source clients that can do anything and you wouldn't know.
3. the client being open source means people can actually look at the code and confirm whether the end-to-end encryption is legit or fake. (if you got the skill to)

That being said. since you have to specifically and explicitly initiate a "more security, less features" conversation to get the very basic security of not having the corporation read and store all your messages... then you really should not be using it.

use signal, not telegram, not whatsapp.

So asshole secularists want to punish Christians what else is new.
> Majdov's show of faith came one day after the Paris Olympics faced intense backlash over its opening ceremony, which featured a drag show version of The Last Supper.

wow.

So asshole secularists want to punish Christians what else is new.

This is not a good idea.

This is pretty inocuious and typically some thing you just ignore and move on from, anyone who needs to react like this is typically so insecure in their power that they will most likely lose it because they insist on doing shit that pisses people off to show that they have power.

Durov/Telegram is going to start actually complying with police/legal requests about user data, CSAM crimes, and the like.

Every company will. No CEO is ever going to jail to protect your data.
Even if he is willing to go to jail, the govt can just seize local servers and take the data themselves. Or send cops to coerce the local IT personnel.

This is why you should never give your data to those companies in the first place.

Or maybe just don't do stuff that involves criminal activity like CSAM production/distribution or such.

Why that never seems to be part of the convo is kinda...odd.

backle, you seem to have gone fucking senile.

>> Bacle (3 days ago): Telegram has FSB backdoors giving Russian govt access to the conversations of all Ukrainian military and govt officials
>> Bacle (today): telegram now explicitly says it will give all user data to any govt that asks for it
> me (replying to above line): this is why you must never give corporations (like telegram) your data. so they can't share it with any govt (like russia govt).
>> Bacle: or just don't do criminal stuff like CSAM. then you will have nothing to hide!

Seriously WTF.

The lack of action on CSAM shit is why France arrested Durov, the FSB backdoors and such were just icing on the metaphorical cake for the western intel groups.

Because vigorously shitting over everyone's privacy to have an easier time prosecuting a single crime that makes evidence of the actual victimization illegal is silly.

It's on the government to investigate. If they want that data, they can go dig it out themselves.

No, I just understand that the level of digital privacy you expect out of social media is not realistic, nor is it realistic to expect the owners of social media sites to not engage in moderation/reporting to the authorities of stuff like CSAM on a pro-active basis, with all the legal ramifications involved.

What does this shit have to do with me telling people to not give megacorps their personal data?
Again, use Signal.
They are truly peer to peer.
Yep. signal FTW. a simple easy switch that takes a huge step towards securing your data.

I have also completely dumped windows. Have a home server instead of "cloud" (noun. someone else's computer)
