Free Speech and (Big Tech) Censorship Thread

I'll give two of them. Facebook and Google. Though I hear Facebook realizes they're in a ton of hot water and are trying to reverse course.

Face book got caught red handed handing over peoples private information to scammers at a scammers convention. The federal government has them dead to rights and its not a question if theirs going to conquences but if any ones going to jail.

Google worked with china to create is social credit system a thing so Orwellian that it got Ted Cruz and Elizabeth Warren on the same side of an issue, its an action so extreme that people are not questioning googles patortism but their sanity. Instead of backing down they have tripled down and are swiftly reaching too dangerous to let live territory.

No company has gone there with out being broken up.

YouTube is Google actually(well ABC Inc.) as far as speech. I'd add that "hate speech" is quite literally what the 1st is intended to protect. Broadly accepted views and opionons don't really need protection. It's the crazy radical ideas that need protecting even if some are vile.

"Hate Speech" is apparently a sort of "assault" that will actually HURT somebody

Or so they essentially say

They also day the Soviet Union wasn't communism and a broads a dude. Forgive me for not accepting thier word on well anything. Truth is regardless of anyone's personal opinion. Free speech that doesn't protect controversial speech is not in fact free.

They redefine things, "controversial speech" is what they're doing what YOU are doing is HARASSMENT & BIGOTRY

They win by redefining terms

While I agree you on pretty much all of this, we cannot discount or forget the wisdom of what Obi-wan said:

"It was the truth, from a certain point of view."

It's an ugly, uncomfortable reality of the world, but perception is 99% of reality. You can have scientific facts, but 'truths' are a far less sturdy ground to stand on.

I'm not saying this because I like this, I'm saying it because it is a bitter pill people need to swallow.

Remember, though, there are still threats to free speech from religious conservatives as well. This includes blasphemy laws and calling criticism X-ist (mostly Islam here), and attacks on porn. They use basically the same exact arguments of the left.
I keep on wondering when they will get around to actively banning ANYONE remotely against the SJW agenda
They do. The dragnets Youtube sets up demonetize small creators who are sex positive/lgbt, but youtube doesn't give a shit, and neither do the SJWs who caused this. They also demonetize antiwar leftists.

I know.

  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Mike Martin and Mark Soldner. Mark (a devout Mormon) wants to enforce morality and a family-friendly society, even if that means creating a government. Mike is utterly opposed to even entertaining the 'suggestion' of a government. Both men work together to fight the war against earth, even while fighting over the personal issues.
Just so you know, Mike Martin from Aristillus is something along the lines of so extremely obsessed with not being a hypocrite that he would rather go broke than be an asshole and he would rather lose his company rather than compromise because taxing everybody to build an army was against his beliefs

Well then, that’s easy, they’re not going with the main flow, as such they can be lumped in with all the “AltRighters” they complain about

Let's take a moment to talk about one of the driving forces behind this censorship and general insanity, which, while not my own words, I feel is best summed up in a quote I got from Melissa Chen on the JRE.

"The Political 'One Drop Rule'" wherein you are as awful as the person you are sitting down to talk to, or giving a platform, or whatever. Case in point...

Keep in mind the link is from a site I know little about nor do I read it, it's literally what the first thing I found when I googled what had happened to Daryl Davis. Perhaps I should've linked to Mr. Davis's Facebook post on the event itself, but that's besides the point.

To call this appalling is an understatement.

Some of the people getting demonetized are full SJWs, though. Oddly hilarious, in a Karmic way, but they still don't deserve this.

Yeah, honestly the best way to get rid of SJWs is to let them run their mouths, the average person should be able to tell they’re crazy and even have recordings of all said crazy

Just so you also know, the first scene in Aristillus demonstrating Mike Martin and Mark Soldner’s sheer difference in principles was when the latter alongside a large number of Mormons went off and tried to shut down a Casino that was near their neighborhood, Mike got the hired security guards to help stop it and Mark said “just let me do this, you need my help to fight off the Peacekeepers” and “there’s MORE than the right to speech, thought and economics. There’s the right to be free of people engaging in sin nearby or having temptations and the freedom so that your kid might not accidentally see a boob”

Those Religious-Righters shutting down what they don’t like just makes us decadent-yet-libertarian types look like underdogs

SJW's are ironically enough probally the best recruiters we have.

We live in a two party system after some ones life has been unfairly fucked over by an outrage mob there is only one place to go and if you got fucked over for bullshit reasons or if you were knifed in the back your going to be truly motivated to get back at those pricks.

Its going to suck now but provided we don't get gulaged which is possible this only has one ending the assholes who started this alone facing all of the people they fucked over.

As a 'Religious Right-winger' (depending on your definition thereof) I can say you don't have much to worry about from the right in this regard.

Now, to be clear, there is a chunk of the religious right that wants to be authoritarian. That doesn't understand why theocracy is bad, and who think that we should basically implement strict religious laws.

That was a small portion of the religious right at the height of its power.

What you can expect from the right in regard to censorship, and expect to have pushed fairly hard, is to remain public decency laws. Most people on the religious right will try to talk you out of what they think you're doing that is immoral, but so long as it's only directly self-destructive, they won't try to make a law about it.

The line that will be drawn is in regards to exposing minors to explicit sexual content. And not 'basic sex ed' levels of 'explicit' content, but full-up pornography or the like. When it comes to censorship, that is the one thing the Christian right will absolutely push. Your strip club can't have explicit imagery on the outside, your porn website needs to have an age-restriction page gatewaying it, etc, etc.

Some parts of the religious right will try to push for harsher or more extreme things, but they're not even close to being dominant within the subculture or 'movement.'

As an example, back in the 90's when the religious right still held some serious political sway, the biggest 'move' towards censorship, was proposals to require cable companies to only make some channels available as parts of bundles. It never had any real traction, but that was the closest thing to gaining any meaningful amount of support, but it was just too damn petty (and stupid) for most to care. Then the issue was made obsolete by the internet.

And yes, there were things that got a lot more publicity back in the day; that one lawyer who couldn't shut up about violent video games, the 'you can't read Harry Potter because witchcraft!' groups, etc, etc. While they might have gotten PR, they never were that large, and they weren't necessarily particularly right-wing either.

Now, in some distant decade, a serious threat might arise, but as long as the stridently secular hard-left has overwhelming majority control of mass media and academia, the religious right has no real chance of implementing any kind of censorship laws. If we start to see a hard cultural reversal in the near future, it might be a serious issue in, say, thirty years at the absolute soonest?
