Factor in the end of the Cold War [actually, should it be called the First Cold War or Phase I Cold War?], decolonization [which has caused as many problems as it solved], and it was pretty much this. Except for the "Nineties Bushfires" [in Their view] in Eastern Europe, of course.

This period of relative peace in Europe is basically an anomaly that they've taken as the norm since "we're smarter/more enlightened now, et cetera". It's why the Ukraine-Russian War is such a shock to a lot of modern Europeans: It's a reminder.

Less than a hundred years ago, we were at each others' throats every decade or so for one reason or another, and given how things are going, I think it'll be another few decades before something happens to return Europe back to what it actually is.
