You are correct, thank you for the correction! I just assumed because default judgement frequently means not showing up, but you know what they say about assumptions! Yeah, I guess that the lack of compliance left enough of a negative inference for a default judgement anyway. Still, if Jones found this preferable to discovery, that says some nasty things about what would have been discovered, I'd say.
