I think he's, in the words of Mao, pushing the bayonet to see if it's going to meet flesh or steel; I certainly wouldn't discard the possibility of invasion.

The Venezuelan Military is pretty clowncar from everything I've heard but Guyana hasn't exactly been making an investment in warmongering thankfully so its military is actually quite small. Still any sort of military action in Latin America seems like it'd be frowned upon by almost everyone of Venezuela's neighbors and beyond I feel (and would hope). But I guess all it could truly take is for everyone else to stand by and do nothing.

Yeah i am in @The Whispering Monk's camp on this. likely yet another brushfire being set to tie up USA's resources ahead of a likely Taiwan invasion plan. we got ukraine and israel going on. add in something in south america and maybe get the NKs to launch with you as well for their own interests and US has a lot of fires to stamp out at a time where there is not a lot of interest in fighting and few leaders would be able to galvanize the population into putting up with the costs needed to win. in both blood and treasure.

There's rumors on the internets that fighting has already erupted in Guyana and Venezuela but the footage used is from Colombian anti-guerrilla campaigns and no Guyanese sources seem to be reported on it despite the fighting having erupted hours ago.

Their newspapers would likely report their territorial integrity being violated by fattie Socialist goons.

Yet they have not.

The referendum in Venezuela is to take place on December 3rd, but it's not a declaration of War or anything like that. It's just a referendum to "advance" claims on most of Guyana.

We already have let them in. China pretty much owns several countries in South America.
PRC is like the irresistible seductress, who sneaks into your bedroom & traps you in a marriage with kids & child support LOL.

PRC probably slipping something "special" in your beverage before you go to bed.... Just saying.

In the meantime, the US is distracted with Putin wreaking havoc in Europe, Israel being sucker-punched.

In a shocking development, all five points of the popular referendum passed with 95% of voters expressing support in basically incorporating most of Guyana into Venezuela proper.

BBC said:
The referendum asked voters a series of questions, including whether they supported Venezuela's claim over Essequibo and whether they agreed with the government's refusal to accept ICJ jurisdiction.

They were also asked whether they agreed to "oppose by all means in accordance with the law" Guyana's "unilateral" use of the waters off the territory and if they supported Essequibo's "incorporation into the map of Venezuelan territory".

All questions were approved by more than 95% of voters, according to the president of the country's electoral authority.

Doesn't particularly change the situation beyond given Maduro the cover of a popular referendum if he does choose to do something.

Yeah…

It’s war then.

This is classic dictator behaviour. A swift conquest boosts the popularity of a wobbling regime.

Let's see if Brazil let's them.

Well that's the thing. There are no major roads between Guyana and Venezuela. All of the roads that could lead from one to the other, go south through Brazilian state of Roraima where currently Venezuelan gangs and cartels are engaging in deadly criminal operations, much to the consternation of the local Brazilian authorities since Venezuela itself isn't really doing anything about exporting its lawlessness criminality abroad.

Not shocked about the so-called referendums passing overwhelmingly. Guyana: You're officially the Ukraine of South America!
