That's rearguard action/engineer reserve job when they aren't doing it in enemy territory. In WW2 it certainly wasn't something spec ops did, just whoever was guarding the bridge, factory, tunnel or whatever.

Just because it would be insane for China to invade Taiwan doesn't mean they won't do it. Nations have a startling ability to convince themselves that stupid wars are in their own interests.

If China attacks the US bases in Japan that's it, there's no choice but for the US to get fully involved because any party that refuses will be voted out permanently.

Japan is currently organizing military cooperation talks with Taiwan.
They haven't gotten very far, but it feels like Japan is worried about China. Worried to such an extent that they are moving outside their 'defense force' ideology into potentially projecting force to counter China in cooperation with Taiwan.
I believe all that's been publically stated is an intent to start meshing the 'Coast Guard' services together in case of disaster or emergencies.
But even then, without the US how likely is it for Japan to get invovled? China would be willing to throw everything they have to capture Taiwan

Far more likely than you might think.
The Japanese do not want China to take Tiawan and the JMSDF is the 4th largest navy by tonnage. The Chinese PLAN or Russian Военно-морской флот would both need to think twice before picking a fight with them, as would the USN.

No. In a stand-up knock-down fight between the USN and the JMSDF the USN would win but the list of USN ships sunk doing it would be very long and very ugly.

The newest JMSDF DDG's are just as good as, if not better than, a Burke. The US Military also has a bad habit of saying "we've got this" only for the opposition to demonstrate that they are not the pushover intel said they were.
Even if true Burkes aren't meant to be solo warships as their main function in wartime. They're meant to operate as part of a Carrier Battlegroup. That's why you tend to see European and Asian multirole naval ships seemingly with way more capability in terms of armament and stuff.
Intel doesn't lie, it is just ignored especially these days.
