I'd differentiate between confidence (or maybe dignity would be a better word in this context) and pride. One is protection of one's self-image that's justified and kept to a reasonable level. The other is not and actively interferes with life (yours and other people's).

Like how a healthy appetite is a good thing, compared to gluttony.

As in many things in life we tend to take stuff too far.

Its a very human flaw and were all guilty of it to some extent.

Another collection of examples on how stupid the CCP is. Everything is fake, billions of dollars to develop AI and they had to hide a woman inside a fake AI display booth last year. In the largest yearly Technology Symposium in Asia. It's all downhill from there.

Currently they have a psyop spreading shit about US users going to jail 20 years for using a VPN to access TikTok. Paying White schills, in Europe, the US to spread this shit.

Eh, it's not CCP shills doing psy-ops, the RESTRICT Act is basically SOPA/Patriot Act 2.0, this time without FIOA ability and with regulations/laws/punishments that fly directly counter to the rest of the US criminal justice system and basically allows the Sec of Commerce to label anyone they like an enemy of the state and throw the justice system at them on the filmiest pretext.

Edit: They took the legit threat of TicTok and went massively overboard, trying to grab the same powers they had under the Patriot Act and even more powers this time, in the hands of even less accountable people.

The last part isn't Chinese psy ops.
Look up the restrict act on the US congress website and read it.
You will see where the truth lies

I'm pretty sure there was a certain "automated" chess machine in the past did the same thing, haha.

You'd be correct.

The Turk

What Was The Turk?

The Mechanical Turk, also known as the Turk, was supposedly an automaton that could play high-level chess and beat most of its contemporary intellectuals and prominent figures.

The machine had the shape of a mysterious Turk wizard-like figure, sitting at a wooden cabinet and holding a smoking pipe. A chessboard rested in front of it. Inside the cabinet, there was seemingly nothing but mechanical parts to make the machine work.

History Of The Turk

The Turk was created in 1770 by German writer and inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen, who claimed that his machine was an automaton that could play chess on its own.

The Turk's first demonstration happened before Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and her court when it defeated everyone who played against it. After that, many other owners toured the world, exhibiting the prowess of the artificial chess player.

During its touring years, the pseudo-automaton defeated prominent public figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin. The Turk even had the chance of facing the famous Francois-Andre Danican Philidor, who was considered to be the best chess player in the world at his time. Although Philidor won, he stated that it was one of his toughest matches.

Although the Turk became famous worldwide for being a solid chess-playing automaton, that was not true. The machine did move around like a human, but it could not play chess independently.

Instead, strong chess masters would hide inside the fake automaton and operate it from inside it. Although many people suspected that was the case (including the famous writer Edgar Allan Poe), no one could successfully explain how the mechanism worked.

The Turk continued its exhibitions for more than 80 years until it was retired and donated to the Chinese Museum of Charles Willson Peale. In 1854, a fire destroyed part of the museum along with the mechanical chess player. Only after its destruction did the son of one of its owners reveal its secret in a series of articles he wrote for The Chess Monthly, a monthly magazine in the United States.

The Turk's Chess Legacy

The fact that a machine could play chess better than humans caused a worldwide uproar. The existence of a device that could beat humans in an intellectual endeavor such as chess made some people fear what was yet to come.

However, the Turk also inspired scientists to develop their own intelligent machines. In a way, the fake chess automaton sparked the flame for the creation of artificial intelligence and paved the way for today's chess engines.

Conclusion

You now know what the Turk was, who created it, how it worked, and more. Head over to Live Chess to create a game against one of our bots and play real chess machines with different personalities.

It also seems to have paved the way for the idea and early concepts of artificial intelligence.

Yes. Those were the Soviets. They were bragging about their advanced computers. They had a chess master squeezed into a box to run it.

The pitiable part is that they appealed to his patriotism and convinced him to sit his 195 cm frame in a space only slightly larger than Warwick Davis. FOR FREE! That poor bastard.

Speaking of Tiktok, why they waited until now to considering it banning it?
Don't know for a certainty, but generally speaking when something that hasn't been a problem for a while suddenly becomes a major issue in the US, it's because they want to distract away from something else so they either want to throw up an alternate press headline or bundle something that would otherwise be unacceptable in an omnibus bill.

That could be anything now but my nose tells me this would be used to smokescreen NY Trump "trial" , if you can call that sham as such which is as much legitimate as the last Brazilian elections.

The Chinese Communist Party apparently appointed a new Catholic Bishop in one of their Diocese without consulting the Vatican, violating an agreement they had established with the Vatican only back in 2018 and renewed just last year in 2022 regarding appointment of Bishops who operate in China. Bishop Shen Bin was appointed to the Diocese of Shanghai, China, replacing a predecessor who was placed under house arrest named Ma Daqin for the crime of resigning from the Communist backed 'Catholic Patriotic Association' soonafter his Ordination.

Radio Free Asia said:
Shen's appointment comes after his predecessor Ma Daqin, who was recognized by both Beijing and the Holy See, was placed under house arrest for resigning from the Communist Party-backed Catholic Patriotic Association immediately after his ordination.

Ma later rejoined the government-backed body, but with a record now tainted by the incident, AsiaNews said.

It said the Vatican would have preferred Joseph Xing Wenzhi to lead the diocese of Shanghai, but that he had resigned in 2012 for reasons that have never been made clear.

The Catholic Church-linked newspaper Milan Avvenire Online said "concerns of social control and public order" shouldn't be allowed to dominate decisions on new appointments.

The Shanghai Diocese praised the appointment of Bishop Shen stating: Bishop Shen Bin said that he will continue to carry forward the fine tradition of patriotism and love of the Catholic Church in Shanghai, adhere to the principle of independence and self-government, adhere to the direction of Catholicism in China, and better promote the healthy tradition of Catholic evangelism in Shanghai."
