The proper analogy IMO would be NATO staging nukes in Ukraine, not:It's analagous to the USSR staging nukes in Cuba
Ukraine joining NATO;
NATO refusing to officially, publicly, categorically rule out the possibility of Ukraine ever joining at some point in the distant future;
NATO refusing to both do the above and also kick out its Eastern European members; or
Ukraine being on the verge of defeating Russia's pet rebels.
All of those seem like the actual reasons Russia has expressed by word or deed in recent times.
I don't think this is still as true as it was till recently.With only a handful of exceptions, the European nations have not acted like Russian aggression was problem -- they have done little to nothing to restore their armed forces to fully funded states.
