Aliens and Predators Franchise Megathread

Meh, not interested.

We've had so many Alien shooters and real-time tactics games in recent years, especially Fireteam, that it's oversaturated, and I say this as a guy who thought AvP 2 was the best thing since sliced bread (2010 had its charms, especially the Predator's glory kills, but it was markedly inferior to the atmosphere and storyline of 2/PH).

The horror is lost.

What we really need is a game like Isolation again: That game is replayed so many times because of how damn replayable/unpredictable it is, especially if mods are involved which ramp up the Nightmare difficulty even further!
But I wanna shoot things and blow stuff up.

Now that Disney owns Fox, back in December they announced that the FX Networks is developing a new Aliens television series.

Finally we can set an Aliens movie on the planet Earth in the 'near future' where everyone can hear you scream.

Even more terrifying is that Disney is rumored to be developing a Predators television series as well.

Well here's hoping they won't be shite... because the franchises have been pretty poop for the past two decades or so. Though I did like Predators.

I cringed at the original Alien movie.

Must be a Predator fan then.

Agreed. Isolation brings the xenomorph back to its Lovecraftian roots. Its always scarier when there's just one stalking its prey one-by-one rather than a whole army of them.

Just trying to survive it, not understanding it nor examining it. Just getting away from a rather nasty invasive species that is engineered to use humans as a food source and reproductive tool.

There are rumours floating about that they're actually starting work on a true sequel (not that Blackout shit) -- I'd take it with a grain of salt, though.

Autistic complaint but I don't like how regular drones/warriors have digitigrade legs most of the time now.
Runners? Okay that makes sense, they come from a dog. But everything else should have good old regular human looking legs like in the first two films.
The fourth film is the start of 'weird leg Xenos' but they have the excuse of being genetic mutants and not 'real' Xenos.

Yeah, human DNA fucking up their biology was the best explanation/cause for those specific xenos, but studios/directors went full on "every Alien is now digitigrade".

That being said, from a game design perspective, Drones being digitigrade (slightly larger with smooth heads, too e.g. Kane's Son and the Sevastopol Drone) while Warriors being plantigrade (and slightly smaller with crested heads) would work well -- it'd allow players to visually identify what's what and what to do accordingly (e.g. who to shoot first, what attacks/abilities they have, et cetera. Doom is a great example of this -- ever prioritized one monster over another because said monster can fuck you up, such as hitscanners over those melee Demons? Or Imps that throw slow fireballs? Same principle).

Exactly! It is a biologically superior organism. You cannot hope to defeat it by conventional means.

Kane's son was plantigrade though (and adorably wore a pair of sneakers lmao).

Its sort-of implied the Nostromo crew could've just shot the alien with their laser pistols (they had laser pistols in the first film, people kind-of forget it), but there'd be no point because the acid would eat through the hull and kill them all anyways. Hence the move to the incinerators instead.

I need to rewatch the original, heh. Still, in a game, separating Drones and Warriors by changing their lower legs/size would still work well. :)

Also, while laser pistols were in the script and they even had holsters for them, they made no appearances, weren't mentioned, and were basically rectonned out by the second film.

I mean, it fit the retro-futuristic aesthetic for the first film, but from Aliens onward where futuristic but conventional was the way things went? It's how we eventually got chunky revolvers (see Alien: Isolation) instead of laser pistols as being canon.

Which is sort of a shame, since seeing them on the big screen would've been pretty cool.

The laser pistols absolutely appear in the film, they are in the holsters as they explore the planet, and Kane pulls it out when he approaches the egg. They also show up when Ash tries to kill Ripley on the table. ;P
The reason they weren't used is, as Parker remarks, "You don't dare kill it".

...How the fuck did I miss that? :ROFLMAO:

Still, they were basically retconned. Now it's all futuristic bullets/revolvers.

>;3 Nope! Even Aliens has 'phased plasma pulse rifles' and several other Aliens (not AVP) media depict energy based human weapons.
They just aren't as common as basic dakka weapons.

Eh, the comics and books tend to go batshit, off the wall crazy with certain elements (and that's when they *are* consistent with each other). I wouldn't really take notice of those (and they conflict so goddamn much!) because most of the time it's all "13 year old kid's first fanfiction" levels of consistency.

IIRC the games (the ones that aren't arcade gimmicks, I mean), even the AvP ones, have the marines/humans using projectile weapons -- even the pulse rifles. They do have energy weapons (see Hudson's boasting to Ripley), but those are the sort of stuff you see mounted on dropships and massive carriers like the Sulaco.

Handheld energy weapons, like the original Alien's laser pistols? Unless it's weird, experimental shit (such as the lasers seen on Xenoborgs), it's all conventional. No laser pistols in sight after Alien, and Aliens has the marines use everything handheld as being conventional (albeit futuristic) firearms.

It would've been cool to see it as the marines' sidearms instead of that German pistol, though. Maybe one or two around Hadley's Hope as props from the colonists' last stand?

Well, I suppose the Shock Rifles in Resurrection could count as a hand-held energy weapon?

But yeah, after Alien? Revolvers, clips, bullets, and magazines.

Retconned.

A laser pistol and plasma weapon is in Aliens Fireteam Elite.
And another plasma weapon is in Aliens Dark Descent. ;D
Just because it's a laser pistol doesn't mean it's very strong though, given the fact it's used with EVA suits it is designed for environments where a regular handgun might not be a good idea.

Ugh, those games. How the fuck each development team got away with such... creative liberties is beyond me.

At least Colonial Marines actually kept to the source material despite being a shite game. sigh

Aliens Dark Descent is pretty neato, I don't have many issues with it.
Fireteam Elite takes on more liberties though. XD

What's your complaints with the games? ;D

Fireteam is pretty much a generic tactical shooter with an Alien theme. It's basically a new Alien Swarm (unrelated to Alien), and you could swap out the recognizable Alien aesthetics for, say, Starship Troopers' MI and Bugs and there wouldn't be a lick of difference.

Dark Descent? Jesus Christ, while they got the creepy, horror/suspenseful atmosphere right, the story itself is complete dog shit. It ranks as bad as Alien: Covenant on the "what the fuck is this?" scale.
