Looks like the French people might be rethinking that.

Maybe. There’s certainly an argument that the pendulum was swung too far because de Gaulle is, well, de Gaulle. On the other hand, his temporary powers during the creation of the Fifth Republic were literally unlimited authority to rule by decree, and he legitimately stepped back from that authority.

But the historic context is important here: the pendulum the other way gave no one confidence in the legislative branch ever getting anything done; again, literally twenty-one different government administrations in twelve years, because NO ONE could manage to create a stable majority coalition. It was totally anarchy to the point where a portion of the French Army went rogue and decided it was going to go suppress the sort of revolution in Algeria, without and then against orders.

That’s kinda the point where General Du Gaulle pretty much went, ENOUGH! I AM TAKING CHARGE AND FIXING THIS.

@Arlos your time is now.
The monarchy has a chance!
Or support the Napoleons. Either choice

Bringing back the monarchy would be a rather paradoxical reaction to the President of France using his lawful authority “against" democracy.

Monarchy will NEVER happen anytime soon!

There is a living Bourbon, a living Orleans, and a living Napoleon.
Any of those three can be technically made monarchs.

On the subject of a French Monarchy…

Oh please, please, please let this be the start of France pulling out of the EU. Because the sooner that particular abomination collapses the better.
