Brazil needs money to make its political machine(with all the graft that it entails) work. China is giving much more money than the West is. It's similar to what happened before WWII, except that the US had both deeper pockets(and was more forthcoming with them) and the ability and will to really fuck up Brazil. Oh, I agree that would be a bigger priority for the USA. It doesn't make a difference. Lula needs the money NOW, and he will side with the ones who deliver. The next president to come will do the same, and so will the one after that. It's a matter of political survival. Unless the agro-exporting sector earns so much money that it's able to quench the thirst of the Brazilian political class, this is what will happen.
