Rian Johnson essentially admitted in recent interviews that he was trying to kill the Star Wars franchise with The Last Jedi; talking about his disdain for the very concept of intellectual property and franchises, and wanting to give it an ending akin to a "Viking funeral" that left no room for continuation.
I would almost respect the flex if that was actually the case.
Except I'm pretty sure it's a case of Rian Johnson years-after attempted ass-covering and principle-erection since he can't really do the 'It was my subverting expectations-y masterpiece!' anymore and get away with it since...yeah, it's pretty-commonly accepted how significantly the Last Jedi split the fanbase and flopped in its purpose. Him running with 'No, I totally was making a principled stand on intellectual properties coming to a satisfying conclusion even though I was working for Disney on a midpoint-film.' isn't very believable.
Plus, if his goal was seeing things off in grand ending...Well, the movie's been discussed to death, but I think it can be reasonably be said that it a lot of people didn't take it as a well-executed funeral piece farewell.
I...I just have this suspicion that Rian Johnson is either not a very good filmmaker (what I trend towards because Knives Out was dull and Looper only kind'a fun serviceable), or, in more charitable interpretation, an inexperienced one who got brought-on by Disney because...I dunnow, Abrams was busy or something?
