China Wuhan Virus Pandemic

What if the CCP’s response is basically a huge, counterproductive case of mass hysteria that will end up killing more people than it saves?

What if it isn’t?

Besides, that’s not how the math works. You can’t go “1.5 million infected / 50,000 dead” and say 3 percent mortality. That’s because many of the infected at this juncture would still be fighting for their lives. The true final mortality rate may be in the area of 20%, should a large portion of that group expire in the future.

I am seriously considering scenarios in my head where China futilely uses nuclear weapons on their own cities as an anti-viral firebreak in a month or two.

Nobody understands the sheer magnitude of this except virus experts and epidemiologists who are currently shitting bricks.

I shat a brick when I realized what was happening. All of us should be shitting bricks.
Like I said, I think people are overreacting here. Just a tiny bit.

Don't panic until the corona virus hits your area in earnest. Divorce yourself from the news for a while, read a good book instead, watch a fun movie, play a bloodsoaked game. Do a basic preparations for SHTF, like basic stocks of food, mask and dysenfectant. Make a plan how to limit your interaction with people if SHTF and plan for how to limit infection chances for interactions you can't cancel. And once again, stop following the news about the virus, there is nothing you can do and there is no point to worry yourself to death until it hits your area in force.

Right, that presents an alarming worst-case scenario.

I'm going to actually step in here though, and say that even with photographic 'identity proof,' this is at best a single point of possibly-reliable data.

From someone working in a place where they send cases they've already decided are irrecoverable.

Don't take this as definitive truth. A very dangerous sign of how bad things might be, but do not panic. Even if the posts are 100% true, survival rates in non-terminal 'care' facilities are likely nowhere near as bad.

Don't do it! Don't do it! Don't!

Cruise ships are disgusting hives of disease where tightly-packed groups of people get Norovirus and start throwing up all over the place. With this thing going around? It's suicide.
Great; now I'm going to have to figure out how to break this to mom and dad in a way that they'll actually listen to me. They've been looking forward to this for a long time. What do you think the odds are that this will all be over by the time we actually go? I mean, we are talking about three months from now.

The problem with a virus is that it's seldom going to just stop. It might mutate into something less lethal, it might be almost eradicated, but there'd still be pockets of it remaining.
Also, the economic effects of this might mean a different sort of world by May, depending on how bad it gets.

On the bright side, humanity might learn a collective lesson about the dangers of over-centralization of production on an international scale. It would be better if things were more distributed - many small factories in countries all over the world making something, rather than just one big factory in one country.

And the Chinese might even learn to stop treating the entire animal kingdom as edible! It's been a while since I checked the Book of Leviticus, but I seem to remember that bats are on the "don't eat this!" list.

Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.
Jesus Christ, what the fuck is wrong with them?

They skin critters alive over there. They cook dogs while they're still living. I'm not kidding. I've seen the footage of barbecued dogs struggling to breathe while their skin's all crispy. I've seen shit that would make you go pale in the face.
They take the mantra of can we eat it too far?

Perhaps the culture has it to do with chinese medicine or because of like for example the bat name in chinese had something to do with luck so they ate it.

For the dogs I know what you mean and it has to do more with the belief of the more they suffer the more tasty the meat will be from kiwifarms.

Like I said, if this keeps progressing the way I think it's going, in May, there won't be any cruises available anyway. There'll be nothing.

You wanna see how panicked I am?

Yes. A fucking MSA Millennium. Still waiting on the damn cartridges. Next is Tyvek suits and gloves, and chemtape to close up the gaps.

I'm fucking serious right now. Get your emergency fund out and start prepping, and avoid people as much as possible while working.
I hope they can get a decent refund then; because they booked the cabin months ago. Although if we wait, maybe they can get a full refund, once the danger (if you're correct about it) is better understood. And if it turns not that bad, or some miracle happens, then we don't lose out. Thank heavens we still have several months worth of emergency food that we got back in the early 2000's, which should still be mostly good (though now that my mom can't eat soy, things might get a bit tricky); now all we need is water (a couple of cases of bottled water from Costco should do the trick), and protection.

I don't think this disease came from the wet market. Patient zero had no contact with the market. This shit probably escaped from a lab. It's either a bioweapon or it's a failed vaccine strain. This is no normal coronavirus. It is a chimera. It is pure death. Do not underestimate the danger, here. This is an existential threat to our entire species.
The doomers will be happy.

I know this is the Epoch Times, and they're a Falun Gong mouthpiece and everything they say should be taken with a heap of salt, but god, if there was a grain of truth to any of this, it's nauseating:

I must reiterate what I said on SB. I cannot imagine anything that I would want to put in my mouth less than something that came out of a motherfucking BSL-4 lab. o_O
I wouldn't if I knew either. There's no way I'm eating lab tested animals unless it's a different lab made for making food taste better.

I wouldn't eat from that lab either, who knows what chemicals they would be using in such endaveour.

A thought occured to me, when pandemic erupts, it would be smart move to keep away from people who are very concerned with their looks as it won't keep them from going to hairdresser, beautician, gym... picking the virus there and spreading it around.

This panic is pointless. There is no evidence of a death rate in excess of the Spanish Flu, nothing being posted here contradicts that. If you are concerned, maintain a large stockpile of food in your home so you can self-isolate. No other preparation is conceivable as necessary at the moment.

Where were you planning to cruise?

If you all were planning to do something in the Caribbean, your probably safe; it's cruises that come near Asia you should avoid at this point.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be the person who knew where it came from. It's a communist country with appropriate cultural pathologies that are pretty widely talked about, particularly regarding civic responsibility.
Imagine some low level worker in the lab, probably undereducated and poorly supervised for such a job by western standards, working in cleaning up or disposal of lab animals.
"Oh, look, perfectly good looking dead bats, those are delicacies, and i have a whole bunch here, take them to the market and they add up to a pretty nice bonus to my crappy salary! No, i won't be eating them, just in case..."

One thing is certain, we will have proper information to replace all this wild speculation with in few weeks.
A pretty large scale sample with perfect environment for the virus to spread, quarantined by a government that's both competent and trusted to not cover things up for CCP's sake.

CCP is underreporting number of infected according to University of Hong Kong researchers.

But not quite to the half million rate... At least as of two weeks ago. The report went into many reasons why the infection rate is so underreported. And it being underreported could technically mean that the virus isn't as deadly as presented (unless the number of deaths is being significantly hidden as well).

Right now, I am not sure what to think of all this. I think, @Train Dodger, calm down but be ready. I am. I have food, water, and a means to shut this house down if I have to. I am hoping, praying, that it won't come to that, but in case it does? I am ready.

That is where we all need to be. I don't know the truth of what's going on in China. I don't think anyone does. Right now, to borrow a phrase from one of my fave books? We're trying to G2 an epidemic from 5000 miles away with managed news and internet innuendo. We're all doing the best we can.

But for the love of God, don't panic. Panic will kill as surely as the damn bug. Be smart, be aware, and don't do things you wouldn't do during flu season for starters. Stay informed, and I don't just mean CNN/FOX. They're getting stage managed by the damn PRC, and we all know it. Check CDC, John's Hopkins, and look for patterns in the data. Read between the lines, and keep in mind, what is usually attributed to malice, can often be correctly be attributed to stupidity. I think at worst, this is another Sverdlosk, which is bad enough.

I am a little closer to this than most, as my wife is Chinese. Most of her distant family hails from Shanghai and Hong Kong, and there's been a lot of rumor running around, and from what she tells me, the authorities haven't helped. It's not on our everyday radar, but it's getting up there. My brother in law, bless him, is trying to get masks to send over there. There's not any to be had in the DMV. Nada, zip, zero. Power of panic.

I was in NYC on 9/11. I saw what panic and being fat, dumb, and happy looks like. We owe it to ourselves and each other to be aware, alert, and informed. We cannot let fear cripple us. Prepping will alleviate that fear to an extent. It's ok to be afraid. Fear focuses us, but panic, panic kills.

<end of soapbox commentary>

You can only worry so much. You can prep as much as where you live allows you to prep but it is the job of the government to do the rest and god help us all if they're twiddling their thumbs.
