Ha! I remember one funny incident back in college, when I still lurked on FB or Meta or whatever it's called these days. Basically, some girls posted pictures of herself in a kimono while in various poses. Cue the righteous lectures on cultural appropriation and other BS, only for the girl to post a photo of her Japanese passport with the details blurred out the next day, along with messages of support from Japanese members of the site.

For once, the self-proclaimed moral guardians actually used their brains and just dropped the issue.

EDIT: I mean, cultural appropriation is BS when you think about it. Logically, condemning and stamping out cultural appropriation would end in mass ethnic cleansing in the USA alone, with all non-Native Americans having to be banned from speaking English before being deported back to Asia, Europe, and Africa.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, in Asia you are expected to appropriate their culture, especially if you intend to stay long. Historically, one reason Westerners were looked down on in Asia was their refusal to learn to speak the native languages, or to adopt the local fashions. In fact, AFAIK, many Japanese today will 'politely' ignore anyone who doesn't speak/can't read Japanese in their own country, or encourage foreigners to wear local clothes (kimonos or yukatas for example) while attending local celebrations. Foreigners that do speak/read Japanese, and respect local traditions, actually get treated very well, almost as though they're Japanese themselves.

"Cultural appropriation", like all the other shit going on, only applies to Whites. It's just anti-White racism that's given a coating of "but it's to protect other ethnicities' culturez!" as an "acceptable" excuse.

I'm surprised the liberal retards in your anecdote had the sense to drop the issue when they realized the tide had turned against them; the same people these days would double down, even if it meant running a proverbial knife over their throats.

Maybe it was because the girl wasn't alone in trying to defend herself, but her fellow Japanese were rallying around her. Basic mob mentality, it's all good when you're picking on someone alone, but when the other side starts building up mass of its own, the first mob starts rethinking their chances. Especially since if it gets escalated, it's not as if Facebook Japan won't stand up for their own people.

Yeah, I admire the Japaneses' guts when it comes to this sort of thing.

They're currently going batshit over the valdalization of Japanese media by American dubbers, such as Jamie Marchi (yes, that Jamie "I have a vagina, deal with it!" Marchi). People are actually cheering on AI taking their jobs because they're that hated.

Someone even used AI to fix her "patriarchy" shit... in her own voice. :ROFLMAO:
 
English dubs are pretty much hit or miss these days. Actually, no, that'd be a lie, English dubs of Japanese anime have generally been bad, barring a short period in the late 2000s to the early 2010s* when they got good after figuring out what they were previously doing wrong. Then the self-proclaimed moral guardian craze started picking up momentum, and things basically nosedived from there.

*AFAIK, that was the time Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne got dubbed, and they were actually more than decent. That, or much like in the case of Redline, the plot of the anime in question was too good that even with mild censoring, the VAs and translators were simply having too much fun to mess it up.

It's not just that; or even mostly, from what I've seen. No; what it really is, is a regressive leftist attempt at repackaging cultural imperialism to make it seem morally justified. They view all other ethnicities' cultures as inherently inferior to their own (or rather, their own lack of culture; beyond the tenants of the regressive leftist cult), and are trying to keep them locked up in their own neat little boxes.

As one of the only countries in the world that isn't built on a native populace but instead a country of immigrants, the US has been historically uniquely good at integrating immigrants. Part of that is cultural appropriation. Instead of multiculturalism bullshit, it uses the melting pot version: we accept some part of the culture into all of american life, and then you ID as American. For a classic example of this, look at Chinese food in America. That's thoroughly American. A ton of Americans, not just Irish, get drunk on St Paddy's day. Bagels, Pizza, and I could go on. And that's just food and drink.

Cultural Appropriation is so core to America, and people want to attack America itself by ditching it.

It's also natural human behavior for one culture to exchange/take ideas, concepts, and goods with/from others and vice-versa. It's literally how all of the world's civilizations and societies developed.

These morons trying to keep such things segregated are only encouraging stagnation.

I'm not very fond of the Japanese Otaku community, but there's something weirdly admirable about how they don't let anyone bully them.

While American comic books were kneecapping themselves with the Comics Code Authority due to a huge moral panic, the manga industry actually doubled down on the NSFW material, and pretty much ignored the critics to focus on what their actual customers wanted.

That's not to say that I support the cause, but I can't deny that they're not cowards.

Centuries-old tradition, actually, going back to the Tokugawa Shogunate. It's an unspoken recognition that while social expectations require people keep their fetishes and the like from the public eye, those same fetishes will still exist. This led to the so-called 'floating world' where class restrictions were loosened, social stigmas were suspended, and people had time and places to indulge in their base desires.

Basically, the Japanese compartmentalized themselves. Outside of the floating world, they had to act prim and proper, but whenever they needed to cut loose, they could just go back said floating world.

Now, said floating world is gone, and has been since WWII, but the basic idea still remains. The government strictly regulates such things - Fate/Zero actually faced an investigation for breaching child pornography laws over a certain character getting shown being raped despite only being a toddler - but overall, they tolerate the industry as there's established precedent for it and earns plenty of tax money.

Yeah, some of the unsavory aspects of Fate/Zero are a gut punch to the stomach. I will suggest anyone to be cautious about it.
