That's why he is moving towards full independence in building a finished products, Mechs and later also ASF, the demand for those will remain high for a long time. There is also argent maple.

Closed. Military. System.
Slightly depressing you had to remind everyone of that. The only reasons those other would exist is as a kind of black joke for any invaders. Ah it looks like we have some more 'tourists' ask them if they have filled out their visas.

Well the forestry service maybe but they would be very different from other worlds forestry services.

Catachan is simply too lethal for infantry not supported by Mechs, you don't conduct training that is worse than real thing, the attrition rates are not worth it.

Alternate source of income: LosTech training support, CAC is literally the only high tech producers ( minus Com*).

How much would companies spend to train their people up on the new lines they will be building based off CAC lines?

Set up school for engineers and line operators, to set up lines, work the lines, and repair the lines.
A pipeline to prep before lines are online, and then the students become train the trainer.

Let Katrina and LIC vet the students.

while that is a good idea, by allowing engineers and line ops into the facilities, you would be giving away ALOT of indirect information: condition of the equipment? state of spare parts for equipment? vulnerabilities of all types.
far too many vital variables for my non-engineer brain to catalog.
so in a long game, that info could come back and bite ya.

Speaker is absolutely correct here: Close. Military. System.
People come to stay.

I can think of two things you can do in a closed military system that you can't do in an open system even after Catachan's lostech is no longer lost. I don't think the Lyran Commonwealth has any other fully closed military systems. They at least have HPGs.

You can run research protected from Comstar interference. There's no HPG and everyone coming in can be screened which lets you achieve even better security than NAIS.

You can protect orbital infrastructure since you don't have to let privately owned John's Law violating dropships near orbit. Anywhere else if a fanatical hostile "direct action" team suborns a civilian dropship they can kamikaze it into your orbital infrastructure and there's not much you can do to stop it since you have to let civilian ships into orbit. Catachan can shoot down anything unauthorized since just by being there they're legally classified as spies. Catachan can only be attacked by large forces that can overwhelm its defenses.

I can see the Catachan system gaining a number of space control systems.

Edit (to provide food for thought):
So let's say that Catachan pulls a not insignificant number of assault dropships and CV dropships, 1 or 2 Jumpships for in-system jumps in case of attack. And they'll probably get a decent amount of ASF supprt for local use.

Those forces have to come from somewhere. Who's watching those assets go away, and how do they take advantage of the lowered defenses where those assets came from?

Already some of this with regards to Hesperus II and Defiance. Brewer is, as usual, ahead of the game. As other manufacturers start to wrap their brains around the changed status quo, they will undoubtedly get in on the action.

And having a bunch of people learning about the stuff also helps the CAC since they get to pick their brains and look for possible future talent to hire when said people's contracts expire

would bringing in some pit fighter exoskeletons from Solaris VII help with the heavy gs. might be a good way to help new people get used to the loading on their bones.

There are already specialised industrial exo skeletons. Solaris pit fighters would be unnecessary. I am wondering how long until they start building more habitation space and such using the mine shafts. The dwarf hold must grow. Weber must eventually have a hall of the mountain king!

Alright, sorry for the extended silence. RL is being a pain in my ass.

First off, my neice started daycare, promptly acquired the Daycare Crud, then passed it around to everyone in the family. Yay. This while I'm trying to get all the projects my dad started but never finished knocked out so we can put the house on the market, since my mom had a bid accepted on a new house that's in town and doesn't have half a hundred acres of land to care for attached. Been busy.

House now on the market. Still have a couple little projects to finish up, but mostly done, and the cold that has been handing on for freaking ever finally seems to be in retreat. Hoping to be able to make some progress writing again, but I'm covering some odd shifts at work to fill in for vacationers. It's that time of year.
