I feel like a Cain game akin to Mass Effect would be cool.

A Mass Effect like formula staring a commissar might be fun, but I think it would be better to have it as a commissar that you vsn choose to play like Cain, rather than Cain himself.

I just wanna play as Cain so I can romance various women of the Imperium only to get a message from Amberly as she gets pissed

No, a Cain game should be a game from the perspective of an Imperial Guard regiment/squad w/e, under Cain.

So like, there's a campaign that tells a Cain story, maybe a new one, maybe a gamification of a book, and it's a nice linear self contained, not terribly long game. And then, after you finish that, if you find yourself really wanting more of the gameplay you can do "Skirmishes" random, mostly unconnected(maybe with the occasional linking of two or three skirmishes), missions where you mostly aren't lead by Cain. And your alternate Commissars all suck, some of them will shoot you for literally anything that isn't shooting the enemy, including taking too long to reload, some of them are mostly fine, but will shoot you if you take a single step back, including to duck into cover after shooting to reload, some are actually fine, but they do basically nothing, they'll yell at you and take the odd potshot but don't do anything useful. The only Commissar you should ever be happy to have is Cain, and whenever he shows up, the mission is garaunteed to go nuts, but, if you listen to Cain you'll probably come out alive, unlike if it happened under any other Commissar.

Yes this game would literally be "Why the Guard thinks Cain is "The Hero of the Imperium""

And maybe there'd be the odd cutscene from Cain's perspective but I genuinely think you shouldn't have it, maybe have a text file that unlocks after the campaign that's Cain's journal from the campaign but nothing more. The player should absolutely leave thinking either "Cain is the best" or "Cain is a Mary Sue". :D.

It sounds nice.
I would like it from his though because his internal monolog would be great

He made a bunch of space marines that HE GAVE TO ALL CHAPTERS.
You would have a point if he kept them all to himself but he made it to make marines even stronger and faster
He did that.
This might've been part of a longer-term plan.
  • Guilliman's internal monologue in Dark Imperium about the Primaris lacking free will unlike 'the old breed', supposedly to make them incorruptible by Chaos.
  • The Primaris Dark Angels from War of Secrets revering him and calling him "Pater Cawl". They've been indoctrinated to treat Cawl as a leader figure.
  • Cawl built Guilliman's new armor.
Now if he was to wait for regular marines to be phased out in favor of his new model, then remotely trigger a hidden killswitch in Guilliman's life-support and Order Sixty-Six build into the Primaris, he'd be exactly what the Codex Astartes was meant to stop by dividing the Legions into Chapters, one man having authority over all the supersoldiers.

That would actually be a neat plot-twist, allow Geedubs to sell two different molds of Space Marines, AND let them create yet another Mechanicus subfaction. Hell, they could include more Eldar (Hahaha) supporting the loyalists against the mechanicus.

What makes the Custodes so much more lethal than Astartes?

I read about a fight where dozens of Astartes fell to kill a single Custodes. Are they that much faster that the Astartes simply can't hit them reliably? Or which attribute of them allows them to survive against so many Astartes?

I don't think it's any single thing. Custodes as a rule are faster, stronger, tougher, more experienced, have better weapons, better armor, and better equipment, and even with the greatest heroes of the marines, it's rare for them to have the edge over the custodes in more than a few areas (and the most likely area, weaponry, is the least relevant).

I haven't seen any indirect fire weapons like Basilisk in any Space Marine chapter's armoury, so for fire support do Space Marine chapters just rely on Whirlwinds and orbiting Strike Cruisers and / or Battle Barges?

That and thunderfire cannons, yes. Marine artillery is supposed to be used for, like marines themselves, fast decisive strikes rather than the sort of massed bombardment the guard uses.

Any thoughts on Total War Warhammer 3?

Yes please.

The more videos I see of it, the more I want.

But I've put in a lot of time in Total War Warhammer One and Two so I'm all on board for the Third one. Already pre-ordered!
