The Chief's Mess is getting out of hand in it's pre-promotion hazing (ignoring hyporthermia symptoms until proper groveling to existing Chief's was done 'to script'), and the military bureaucracy around medical records/treatment seems purposefully designed not to communicate with the MEPS system or with itself in some ways.
The hazing was only discovered/called out, because of a second mental health screen for a delayed promotion caught it in the evaluation, and recognized the description of hazing.
The excuse of the Chief's Mess to the sailor in question during the humiliation ritual was that 'This Isn't Hazing, What I Went Through In My Day Was Hazing' attitudes.
Apparently hypothermia induced difficulty remaining lucid and only allowing 3 hours of sleep for most days in not warm conditions until the person 'follows the script', regardless of medical issues, just to get a Chief's Anchor, is/was thought of as acceptable in the NCO ranks of the Navy.
I think the days of the 'good old boys' club that is/was the Chief's Mess may be numbered, and it is going to face changes with a new generation that will not put up with this abuse and will report it, instead of 'staying silent' to be 'one of the boys' when abuse happens.
Survival training has a place in the military, hazing does not.
Yeah, there is a difference between some good joking that can be innocent and this.
Like I get it, "Weaker generation" but with suicide always an issue and the current climate sucking as is. Doing things that could cause death is to far.
Like when I got to my first unit the unit had some fun and pulled a prank on me, and I wouldn't call it hazing because it was nit harmful and honestly helped me realize how the army is.

Sadly this is not something that seems isolated to the Navy, at least in terms of superiors/senior NCO's ignoring medical issues and directives and trying to snowjob service members when it is caught.
I've heard some bad stories out of the Texas NG and some army units about medical profiles being ignored by petty tyrants who think they only exist to 'get out of work', usually in 'secondary' dept's like maintenance or motor pool.
Seeing it out of something as prestigious and trusted as the Chief's Mess is a new low, though.
Subordinate health does not seem to be a priority like it should be, and the senior NCO ranks are letting the mystique of their position go to their heads in an increasing frequency it seems.
Maybe this is an 'emerging' issue, but maybe it's just the younger gens will actually report this sort of thing now with less fear and more expectation of honest processes, have access to easy tools to do so more often than in the past, and expect reports of abuse to be acted on in accordance with health and safety regs, not 'tradition'.
Oh I know how bad it can be with them ignoring profiles.
The army made it so the command can only see things like what they are able to do and that's it.
Still doesn't stop commanders and senior enlisted from trying.
That isn't the issue.
It is when you go against a medical professional telling that service member they are not to do something until a certain time due to healing or what ever it could be. Getting forced to break that.
And there is a diffrence between simple rough housing and hazing. Nearly killing service members is not good.
Having them get smoked as a battle buddy for a prank may be considered hazing to some, but it is a way to team build.
There is a diffrence. Yes you embrace the suck together but you don't go to the levels or nearly killing someone to make them fit in.

I have: my father and his entire unit. 1 near death and had to be removed from training, 3 heat strokes, 2 people passing out from dehydration, and everyone with extreme sunburns on their scalp.
They had been forced to stand at attention in the hot summer sun, in georgia, without hats and without water. For over 2 hours.
Hey, that's actually a good thing.
Oh geez. That can happen when it goes to far and becomes hazing.

To simplify, unless you're actively engaged in manning the nuclear arsenal for MAD deterrence, you're not essential for "national defense". Anything else is just your leadership trying to genocide you with enemy bullets in favor of a new and hopefully cheaper underclass of foreigners or robots.

Someone did point out something to me that made this stuff make sense to me. Communists within the U.S do still want to overthrow the U.S. government as well. they have infiltrated a lot of aspects of the government already. would it be surprising to find out that they have infiltrated the upper end of the military and are running it into the ground to weaken their future foe?
I mean, possible, but you can't gurantee to get that high. And you can't gurentee to end up in spots that you would need to be.

Wasn't the British army always historically second rate? After all the British are an island nation so they always put priority on their navy.
It was still much more powerful number and funding wise then now
