Until they make a universal physical fitness test that doesn't wave away requirements for pushups, situps and running speed that others holding such positions must maintain, this is just patronizing at the most basic and broad sense of the word (hehee 'broad').
Combat arms should be open to women. Those women should meet the same standards as the men in those arms. A potential overhaul to the standards in general that actually makes the physical fitness testing more applicable to positions and what might need done seems like it might be worthwhile, but is something I've just heard bandied about and can't speak to in particular but makes sense.
This coming from both principled and pragmatic source, as well. Equal standards are the only just ones here in principle. Pragmatically? It's not a sports competition where splitting into male and female is applicable or warranted to make for competition between groups, it's a team sport where everyone's supposed to be pulling together.
They are making said test. It is called the ACFT, and the score you need to get is based on the job you do, and officers have to have one higher. It is still in the works, mainly since most people currently in the Army, even Lt. COL. that are female are having issues (She is nearing 50 last I checked so kinda unfair for Officers, even male ones) as the deadlift and Leg tucks are the hardest fro females right now.
Infantry, tankers and the like have the highest requirements while people like me in MI have lowest. Though depending on where we are stationed it can be raised to the highest or so on by our commander.
Equal standards are oppressive towards women, which goes against the core mission of the army to promote the cause of social justice.
Not really. We are all equal, but we know the physical diffrence
I'm sorry, but this is a bad idea.
I could reasonably see women as tankers, but grunts?
No, that sounds like a recipe for a lot of under-strength basic combat units, when women get pregnant to get a medical discharge.
It's an ugly truth, but I've met enough former Army guys with stories about it to know it's real.
They are already Cav scouts, which are basically super light infantry. They generally ride in bradleys or even lighter, strykers or M-ATVs. Lightly armored, but not Humvee weak. SO yeah.
Hell the first females to pass Ranger school were officers and they did not have things lowered. It is doable, they just have strict and painful training.
It should be noted that Infantry school is now 22 weeks long, and is not easy. It is the hardest training for Soldiers, besides SF. They do infantry first though.
Most women will carry MGs if they wanna be in it. Smallest usually gets the biggest gun./
