The thing is peasants could read and write, to a point. Literacy, back then, was based on if you could read and write Latin or what passed for it in the Catholic Church.
True.Polish and rusin peasants certainly could not read latin, but polish or rusin languages - some certainly could.

It wasn't completely a given, though -- signs were there to tell a peasant what that business did, for example, since a lot of them couldn't read.

For a blacksmith, it was an anvil; for pawnbrokers, scales.

Incidentally, that's where surnames came from; Hooper if you made barrels, Smith if you were a blacksmith, Butcher if... well, you know. If you had multiple "Daves" in a village, calling someone "Dave the Butcher" eventually became "Dave Butcher", to differentiate from "Dave", "Dave," and "Dave".

But yeah, literacy in things like (to us) old German, French, Norman, Norse, and English (or their predecessor languages) was a lot higher than what people, and the media, believe.

If we're talking in general about the whole Middle Ages, it would depend very much on which country, in which century. Also on urban or rural, and so on.

Good News @Cherico you might get a raise soon

$50 minimum wage. wow.
Just so people understand how utterly insane and economy breaking a $50/hr minimum wage is... that comes out to $104,000 a year.

The current average individual income in the US is around $65,000. An income of $104,000/year is in the 83rd percentile, meaning that 82 percent of people make less than that amount...

To say this would utterly break the economy and wreck literally everything is an understatement.

these people are idiots.

The minimum wage isn't where you tackle poverty you handle it by trying to make the price of living cheaper you know what would help with that? Stop over regulating the construction industry and let people build homes.

Possibility one: they are bliss-ninnies who assume without thinking about it that every business has infinite money. Like a child who won't understand why Dad refuses to buy him a helicopter.

Possibility two: they are intentionally destroying business and industry. They don't want people to have jobs. They want everyone to be living off govt handouts.

the problem with number 2 is that the government doesn't have the money to do that and never will.

they aren't the federal government and don't get to print money. I'd almost expect a sharp shift in policy in the near future when the various government workers start retiring and trying to collect their pensions. that debt bomb is gonna be wild.

Also, FedGov money-printer go wrrrr doesn't actually fix the real problem with no one having jobs.
There have to be people working on farms or fisheries to produce food, or nobody gets to eat.

Vast majority of people don't think with facts and logic, they think with their feelings.

Secondly, western economy, ceased being about people having productive jobs, it's all about financialisation of debt driven post-industrial economy. With supremacy of petrodollar, USA can theoretically print infinite money, so USA policy makers are a bit more delusional than elsewhere.

It's ironic: These morons simp for communism because they've been spoonfed this "utopia" bullshit by their professors and other teachers, but the reality is that it isn't their sitting in Starbucks and sipping $20 cups of mochachocasvanillaswill while protesting against capitalism on their $2,000 iPhones; it'd be them working in the fields, factories, and wherever they're placed.

God help them if they're actually physically attractive women -- the shit that happened in Communist Russia was horrific for a girl if they had a pretty face. At best they'd be a mistress for government officials, likely resulting in them raising a bastard child when the inevitable happens; at worst, they'd be a whore in a bordello somewhere.

My family history can attest to that, my grandparents lived through the Holodomore and Nazi occupation. About >85% of their living family died. While the Nazis gang-raped and made my grandmother a slave laborer when she was 15, ( Even gave her a nice tattooon her wrist). The Nazi’s let her eat so she could work, in her own words “Nazis much better than communists”.

How totally fucked up is communist ideology that if you had a choice you would pick Nazis making you a slave, tattooing a number on you, and gang rape on the side?

Fuck all collectivist of any flavor, they all are just feudalist rebranded for better appeal to to the peons.

Do not insult feudals. In most cases they cared about their serfs. For example in Poland gentry usually gave food during winters to those who lacked it,and even sometimes provided some medical help.

And,when Poland is only catholic country which burned many witches/becouse we do not have Inquisition/ they almost always was burned in towns and cities, not villages - becouse gentry do not wonted to lost workers.

Not good,i knew. But still much, much better then anything commies did.
