Yeah I think the treatment or shaming/smearing of public figures like these famous Authors from previous generations is certainly deserving of a thread of its own for discussion. Having it in this thread is definitely is a bit awkward.

Tolkien being accused of racism/sexism/religious bigotry/you name the ism is an old hat.

Literally all these charges have been addressed at some point or another.

As for the letters on women-I recall he was basically telling his son(who was soon to be married IIRC) “this is how women behave, don’t believe this, don’t take this as granted”.

I am rather concerned about his works being poached for bad adaptations in a few years.

I blame american leftards for that. They have an obsession with shoving minorities, especially blacks, into every show that isn't sufficiently diverse.

“White” as a social and political notion only really makes sense in the United States, Canada, NZ, South Africa, and any other British settler colony. And even then there are nuances involved. In Europe where there was not any non white population to compare or contrast it to, the idea of whiteness as a social and political notion is probably one of the most bullshit things there is. Not that it isn’t in the US either but I digress.

But the modern left is obsessed with race, and actually pretty parochially American, assuming that world issues are reflective of American ones.

Regarding tolkien’s works-I am concerned the younger members of the family won’t have the devotion to their ancestor’s work and will sell the rights in a few years.

Definitely, you know how Stan Lee’s daughter treated him alongside his nurses and agents?

That’s the scary thing about being old, your mind is degrading and your body needs constant help from others, and you are at THEIR mercy

Your grandkids or great grandkids or even just your kids may just see you as a waste of space, a nonperson or decoration. Maybe even a source of inheritance money.

The fact that you might barely be able to hold a conversation makes things worse.

Apart of me wondered if Christopher Tolkien was pushed out or tricked into signing away the amazon LOTR thing.

The deal was inked about the time he resigned.

If your a great grandchild of JRR Tolkien-and say it’s 2026, the amazon project is almost over and has been pretty well received.

You feel the IP you hold is more a burden-it could be a source of income, and you don’t really care that much about LOTR. You definitely don’t want to hold the IP for the next forty years or whenever it enters the public domain.

So if some corporate representative approaches you and asks “I know the will says otherwise, but we are really interested in adapting the silmarillion to screen, and we know you want the burden off your hands, we would be happy to work with you”

^that’s my biggest concern.
