They probably just wanted to attach his name to early promotional material, to make it look like they were going to be respectful towards the source material in their adaptation. Once they thought nobody was paying attention though, they got rid of him.

Probably gonna watch it either way as I like fantasy. But will probably see if I can speak to an old schoolmate as to its accuracy given their love for the franchise and I'd rather not let my thoughts of a show based on a prior source be corrupted by only knowing the show variant.Bad news, people. The contract says the Tolkien estate can veto material.
It wouldn’t surprise me though if Amazon is or had found a way around that.
Probably by cutting the estate out of any creative process as much as possible.
I suspect they won’t outright contradict canon-at least not overtly. Like making Sauron and Galadriel lovers or something.
But they will add their politics and propaganda.

One of the things they left out of the Tolkien biopic and I wished they hadn't. Was that Walt Disney and J.R.R Tolkien had a personal feud that spanned their entire lives. Or at least Tolkien had one, Walt seems to have seen it as something playful and he mostly did the old timey equivalent of shitpost at J.R.R with letters like "I'ma buy the rights and make Gandalf sing and dance muahahaha"
The hatred stems from their own approaches to storytelling. Tolkien was a purist who was convinced kids would sit down and read books no matter what, Walt believed that in the era of television and beyond, kids weren't gonna sit down and read big ass books and the attention span issue was only gonna get worse. So Walt viewed himself as someone saving the classics by transferring them to the big screen, he was basically trying to preserve fairy tales and inspire kids in the pre ADD era. Also, make a fuckton doing it.
Both were artists with passion for their work and who took their self appointed missions mega seriously and Walt Disney reaaallly wanted LOTR.
Had he still been alive when the silmarillion came out, he'd have wanted to do a Fantasia version of the Valaquenta and the first age. He probably would have gotten Led Zep and other rock bands to do the soundtrack, given Walt wanted to do a sequel to Fantasia every decade with more and more modern music.
But both men viewed each other as an anathema to each other's work.,.Walt more playfully..but Tolkien flat out calls him Morgoth in a lot of his writings.

Jeff Bezos used to do tabletop Campaigns set in the LOTR verse off a DnD mod..the scripts are literally adaptations of his old campaigns. He isn't making this show for a wide audience..He's embodying the selfishness, rudderless bullshit Generation X was famous for in the late 90's and he's blowing billions just to entertain his buddies over pizzas and beer.
I don't think he gives a single solitary fuck about whether or not the show makes any profit for Amazon..He's worth too much money and is way too personally involved with the show. Which leads me to believe he's burning cash just for nostalgiasake.
What we're gonna get is literally fanfiction.
