United States The United States and Immigration Policy

I'm assuming the defense was something along the lines of it being a joke or a hyperbolic expression of whatever, which I guess could in theory fly in court.

I'm more interested in how many similar cases there have been, there's no way this was the only guy talking about wanting to murder ICE agents and the like.

But still, I want to know: Is it now acceptable to post bounties on people on twitter? Are you covered by the law? What would happen if someone did kill the mark of the bounty?

One someone's acquitted of a charge, they can't be tried on it again, and the acquittal can't be appealed.
...except an appeal isn't a trial of the accused. It's effectively a trial of the judgement/court.

EDIT: I mean, the justice system is weird enough in some places that I'm not saying that's not how it works... just that it's not how I'd intuit to work.

The United States' Common Law considers an acquittal to be un-appealable. I am not sure about the detailed jurisprudence of whether or not a second trial can be ordered in certain very limited circumstances of profound malfeasance, or if the prohibition is absolutely universal everywhere in the US because of the principle of "Double jeopardy".

An acquittal can be changed to a mistrial in the event of either jury tampering or extreme misconduct by the judge and thus a new trial could take place

I thought that was about it. Thank you very much.

I will note that I've never heard of it actually happening in the US, at least in the last few decades. Judges are incredibly loathe to overturn acquittals on the grounds of double jeopardy, even in cases where there was jury tampering by the defense (see John Gotti). It has happened in the UK, with a recent murder case which had serious jury tampering issues being retried without a jury by the bench.
