Honestly after playing the Tomb Raider reboot I can't help but think that half of the appeal was watching a hot girl having the absolute shit kicked out of her; because the game sure as shit likes showing it.
It makes the character relatable in the fact she actually suffers from pain and isnt OP Mary sue.
No the video games intent wasn't for kinky masochism with those scenes... it was for character and to establish her legitimacy and growth in the eyes of the player. Similar mechanic (to a lesser extent) was used in Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 after all. Or even in the new Resident Evil 3 remake where Jill Valentine ends up getting smacked around more then John McClane… though far less damage is visibly sustained.
