Basically a sorta thread game. Take a thing that really happened, then show that the root cause of the problem was government.

Ideally, it should be surprising/weird, an unintended consequence, and also the link between the government policy/law and the result should be defendable.

I'll go first: Dead lesbians in fiction.

Now you may not know this, but there is a tried and true trope of killing off lesbians in fiction. It happens to one of almost every pair. Just looking at TV, it got so bad there's an infographic:

This trope originated in lesbian pulp romance, which for decades were prevented from having a happy ending. Lesbian characters had to end up either in a hetero relationship, insane, in prison, or dead. This lasted for decades, firmly entrenching this concept of no happiness for fictional lesbians into the culture, until the publication of The Price of Salt, which was recently turned into the movie Carol. Anyway, guess who stood in the way of lesbian novels with happy endings?

The Post Office, which banned them because they were promoting homosexuality if the main characters found love, but were okay if they were miserable at the end. Just one more thing to blame on government.
