Newt Gingrich was summoned by the Vice President, who retired to his vacation home in the outskirts of Cape Cod after delivering his concession speech in Concord, NH on Tuesday night. The defeat was a stunning & devastating humiliation for the Vice President, who didn't anticipate losing in the nation's first presidential primary in order to keep his campaign alive. Hinman was equally concerned, having warned the Vice President that his base of support could possibly shift towards former US Treasury Secretary John Connally if his campaign no longer appeared viable. The good news for Brooke was that the next primary was his home state of Massachusetts where he enjoyed strong, overwhelming support of Bay Staters. The upcoming primaries in Massachusetts & Vermont were considered likely Brooke victories which would give his campaign a much needed boost before heading into Florida.10:00 AM EST, Wednesday, February 25th, 1976

"Newt" said the Vice President, swiveling around the area in his chair "just tell me what we're doing wrong?" The premise of the question startled Gingrich, who explained the situation. "Mr. Vice President," he began "I believe this campaign would benefit more by seeking and emphasizing your outreach."
"What do you mean emphasizing outreach?" intrigued the Vice President, who was leaning back in his chair.
"Well, your campaign associates have been having you running a national campaign with reliance on small retailing politics, which is basically a local election. Now, the good news is that there's still a solid core of Republicans who can see the bigger picture but not every state is New Hampshire. I suggest you need to make clear to voters what it means directly to have you as their next President than Reagan."
