Star Wars Star Wars Discussion Thread - LET THE PAST D-! Oh, wait, nevermind

Isn't that the show that everyone and anyone aside from KK and her sheep-like clique are trying to stop/kill? And which may be killed because KK is being investigated for what's basically money laundering/fraud to fund said money sink?

Yeah, I get the feeling that show isn't happening.

Well if it's Light Side Jedi navigating a murky galaxy whilst adhering to their Code in a world of moral ambiguity, that could be interesting to watch. Such an attempt would require a fair bit of nuance and creativity and good writing of course...

Shit... :p

Disney making a Lawful good doesn't mean Lawful stupid show? I doubt it.

In completely other thoughts, I've recently been re-reading the old Jedi Apprentice sub-series from Legends. They're really good books despite being clearly aimed at a young adult audience, but the retroactive background they create for the Jedi Order itself (and the character of Qui-Gon Jinn) introduces so many fucked up details that it's no wonder at all that they have inspired a really disproportionate number of "fix fic" type fanfiction works.

Mostly, Qui-Gon is a terribly broken person and doesn't even realize it, mostly because his brokenness manifests as hypocritically ping-ponging back and forth from being self-righteously by-the-book whenever the rules suit him, and self-righteously throwing out the rules whenever they don't. This is, I should point out, exactly the behavior we see from him in Phantom Menace; he's all about making snap judgements that are substantially based on whatever is most convenient and expedient for himself, and then making up whatever justifications suffice.

Of course this is partially an excuse for having Padawan Obi-Wan repeatedly dumped on his own without adult guidance, in the more or less typical manner of childrens' books, but it's well-written and consistent enough with the limited amount of canon material from TPM that it doesn't feel like a plot hammer or too much character bashing.

Yoda, likewise consistent with movie canon, is a sneaky, sideways little troll. As in, he's not a bad person at all, but he's so terribly senior that nobody ever calls him out on doing obfuscating shit, and he has an absolutely terrible bad habit of manipulating everyone and everything around him to achieve the outcomes he wants.

(Remember how much he just plain fucked with Luke when he arrived on Degobah? Yeah, that.)

Well, I mean, at lest it's consistant with the movies. Which is a heck of a lot more then a lot of what can be said for 'Disney canon'.

Also, flawed heroes tend to be more interesting, even if unintentionally done as such.

Qui-Gon in the Apprentice books is very clearly intended to be a flawed hero, although perhaps not quite as flawed as he actually comes off. He is definitely a very poor fit as a Master for Obi-Wan, and that is 100% Yoda's fault. Yoda basically decided that forcing Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan together was the best way to help Qui-Gon get over his issues, and engaged in considerable manipulation to make that happen.

Which sort of works in story terms, but out of character, "Okay, so you're literally sacrificing the emotional and physical well being of a child in your care in order to avoid having to just fucking exercise authority over Qui-Gon and tell him that he's fucking benched until he sees a mind healer. You've been drinking your own Kool-Aid WAY too long, Yogurt-for-brains."

Like, that's straight up in the stories, not just headcanon rationalization. It's actually even worse with rationalization, because it means either the Jedi Order has pretty much zero safeguards against Padawans being abused by their Masters, or Yoda/Qui-Gon managed to pretty much effortlessly bypass and overrule all such safeguards.

so the jedi in the prequals.

...might as well just play KOTOR, at least you have the guarantee of a good story.

It's been twenty years! I'm Kreia'd out by now. She's got hour long lore videos dedicated to her with hundreds of thousands of views!

Plus be nice to explore it from the more Lucas interpretation where the Force is default light side as opposed to the other interpretation like in the KOTOR games of the Light v. Dark sliding scale.

You're saying you've become apathetic to Kreia. And therefore, we should waste no more time on her.

So it is true, what she said.
