Star Wars Star Wars Discussion Thread - LET THE PAST D-! Oh, wait, nevermind

"life essences".

"luminous beings we are not this crude matter"

"One who has returned from the netherworld of the force"

The existence of a non physical soul or essence is expressed clearly in the movies.
They avoid calling it a soul, though, and don't ever mention that. This one goes full in on that. If they had done something similar but called it a force thing, I'd be happier with it. If it wasn't a Star Wars thing, and had been written better, I'd also like it. But as it was, it was shit.

Oh, and speaking of bad books, there was one, and I might be referring to the wrong book here, that was just badly written. I think it was the one with the other Emperor's hand, and the Solo's are all visiting a planet with her on it? I could be wrong though.

It would be an interesting concept, if they had mentioned souls at all in the movies. If they had made it all force weirdness, that would have worked too. But they didn't (from what I remember), and I remember hating that book.

As I recall they plug you into a machine, inject you with some pseudo science magneto fluid, activate the machine ripping your life force out of you and dumping it into various types of fighters and other machines where it powers them and leaves some kind of residue of the person.

And they had a brainwashed force sensitive kid use the force to help the process become even more effective on the victims, so definitely some force shenanigans going on.

Honestly, it kinda reminds me of five nights at Freddy's now that I'm thinking of it.

Weird.

That's like saying "they didn't call it a rose though, they instead should have called it some fantasy name". Its referring to the concept of a soul whether or not the word itself used.

Is it worth going back and reading the Legends books? I know they did some weird stuff, but are there any recommendations for any good ones?
The republic commando series. If you want to finish it reas order 66 and imperial, but I domt recommend them for...thag is the major start of Traviss jedi hating.

I found a link to some media analysis blog after one of it's articles was linked to in a thread. Checking the main site out of curiosity, I found an article about TLJ that was exactly the kind of TLJ article you'd expect from someone with a blogspot site dedicated to commentary on media:

And hey, maybe this analysis of the film's thematic structure is accurate (whether that makes it the best Star Wars film of all or not...😂😂😂)
The simple response to this glowing praise of The Last Jedi is, of course, "Then why did episode 9 turn out the way it did? Tell me the all the brilliant Socialist storytelling quirks of that film, please..."

I mean? The Resistance isn't interested in overthrowing the galactic socio-economic order. Finn says of the weapons dealers, "make em hurt".

Which...like what? That's socialist politics?

If TLJ is socialism, its the most watered down meaningless "socialism" I've ever encountered.

I mean...it doesn't really "decenter Campbellian individualism". Rey is super amazing even if she is "nobody". Holdo is literally top brass.

Like if the resistance was getting the masses to strike and rise up against the FO, sure socialist heroism. This has to be the greatest reaching to make a political soapbox I've ever seen.

I just hated the movie, and don't care what its defenders think. they were full of it in 2017, and they're still full of it in 2020.

Anything by Stover.
Anything by Luceno.
Yoda: Dark Rendezvous is super underrated.
Did you know Greg Bear wrote a Star Wars novel, and it was actually pretty good? Read Rogue Planet.
The X-Wing series is great, especially the Allston ones.
The Darth Bane trilogy is okay, but really brought down by Karpyshn's videogame-tier conception of the Force; still worth a read, though.
I'm also partial to Truce at Bakura and Death Star, though from what I gather those are niche opinions.

You know a show focused exclusively on one moderately sized ship and her crew either in the Galctic Civil War or the Clone Wars wouldn't be a bad idea. So basically it'd be focused on a Dreadnought Class Heavy Cruiser.

Along with Nu!Trek, the so-called Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and most of Disney canon is a textbook case of the producers and other executives wanting to bring classic franchises in line with 21st Century, 'liberal and progressive' attitudes

It doesn't matter that they have to sacrifice a good story about it, but hey? What am I but an obsolete and out of touch relic of the late-20th Century, so what does my opinion matter to the new generation?

And strangely enough, one of those classic franchises/films perfectly summarizes my thoughts on the new, liberal agenda of Hollywood.

The really sad part is that Disney actually knows how to do it right. Meshing progressive and inclusive themes with the classic Star Wars mythos, that is. Rogue One and The Mandalorian proves that much, hell, both would fit in just fine with the rest of Legends. So in a way, it actually does boggle the mind why they can't be consistent with standards.

As someone who is the new generation, I do not put myself in with those that call themselves the progressive generation. It doesnt help being from the south and growing up around people with simialir thinking as me, that we are not like those SJW types that people claim are mostly Gen Z.

I liked the ST with the exception of TRoS, whihc is okay. I loved Solo and Rouge One. I have always loved TCW, I absolutley love the Mandolorian.
I also liked te NU trk movies, not so much the shows.

What we need is Lucas to take a break and listen to thier fans. Hell EA is doing a better job at listning to fans then LucasFilms is, which saddens me, because I liked most of what the put out (Some books, and comics I dont like)
