Star Wars Star Wars Discussion Thread - LET THE PAST D-! Oh, wait, nevermind

If anything I’d think Palpatine would be pissed that Tarkin didn’t survive to be tortured to death by him. He was in charge of the cool new toy and it got blown up!

I think that's one of the reasons Tarkin didn't even entertain the thought of having an escape plan. It wasn't just arrogance. He knew if things went wrong he'd be far better off going down with the ship.

That is all.

Hmm...I think Mara's position was that she disagreed with using the Death Star on Alderaan. Sure, Alderaan had always been a hotbed of rebel sympathies, but it was a Core World, with a lot of influence and historical weight that should have been dealt with subtly. Add to that Tarkin's orders being to eliminate the rebel strongholds in the Outer Rim - like Dac, while builds all the rebels' capital ships, the loss of which would have been a heavier blow to the Rebel Alliance than that of their political backers on Alderaan - to say nothing of Mara's own preferences when it comes to getting things done, I can sort of see her point.

And of course, the glorious Emperor had nothing to do with it. All Tarkins work, nothing that could reflect badly on her father figure in Life, her idol.

What Tarkin did was basically show the people they had to fight or die. The Empire would wipe out Core worlds at will, now. When if they were told the thing was going after Outer Rim strongholds? They could care less. Especially if Imperial propoganda painted them as Separatists supporters.

Yup. That's pretty much why Mara thought it was stupid. At the end of the day, so long as the Empire controlled and had firm support from the Core Systems, the rest of the galaxy could hang. The Core just has that much more money, industry, and population. Not to mention much more Humanocentric, even if only in terms of sympathy. So what if Dac or even Bothawui got turned into rubble? Coupled with a propaganda campaign, there'll be a furor for a few months at most, and then things quiet down as apathy settles back into place.

The core never really did care much about the Rim, which was one reason why the New Republic failed later on.

Let's be frank, evil as he is, the Emperor probably shat himself when he realised Tarkin blew up a Core World. This is political suicide for the entire Imperial power structure. Sometimes I wonder whether or not Vader got an earful for not reining Tarkin in there.

In a watsonian sense, Tarkin probably planned to delete Dac just as soon as he was done with the whole missing plans business. Unfortunately that’s not the sort of thing you can just let sit, after all.

Except that was Darth Vader's job, which Tarkin really should have stayed clear of.

In fairness, if I was him I wouldn't trust anyone else to see this through either; not even Vader. Imagine he does fly off to Dac and blow it up, only to discover the rebellion has gone to ground in the meantime and made off with the plans. When they inevitably try some shit eventually do you really think that Palpatine is going to accept "Recovering the plans was Vader's responsibility!" when making sure they weren't stolen in the first place was Tarkin's?

Rey glared at the dark hooded figure. She was here to end his tyranny once and for all. Then he spoke. "Yousa not knowing who yousa grandfadder is, do you?"

She shook her head. "No I do not. Not that it matters I will triumph over you!"

The figure threw his hood back revealing the face of Jar Jar Binks. "Mesa yousa grandfadder."

I know you’re joking, but now I’m wondering how Rey having a Gungan grandfather would work? I’m no xenobiologist, but I imagine there’d be some, ah, “reproductive issues” there.
