So what are you watching?

Watching Blue Eye Samurai and I am loving it. I wanna stop watching it but its so good that I can't stop. But I mean I will stop because its Christmas Eve and there are duties to be done. But that's besides the point. It's just a really good show about some disgusting half breed "lad" (hence the title of the show) on the path of revenge in 17th Century Japan. The animation is great, the action is bloody and glorious, I love the fight choreography and the characters are just wonderful. Each episode has been a treat so far.

You'd think with so many identifiers that the show could be exploding with woke messaging but instead the character attributes are being used in some strange ancient manner of storytelling where instead of using it to preach on contemporary social issues, it's being used for character development and plot narrative. 😭

But yeah if you have Netflix (which I don't hence I'm binging it) I'd give this animated series a watch. So far its a highly detailed beautiful bloody tale of revenge.

First episode is on the YouTubes...

Samurai is not black? are you sure, that it is really Netflix?
Jokes aside - Merry Christmas !

We ended up watching the whole thing... it was great.

Episode V was so good that it made the subsequently still amazing episodes almost suffer in comparison. Amazing storytelling and kept us engrossed until it was over.

So....

I watched Fast X today.

Ok, good bits. The bad guy's not just having fun, he's both chewing on the scenery and being a murderous metro-sexual, in ways that are somewhat creepy. He works, well, reasonably, as the bad guy. And the action scenes, well, they're, well, some work, and some are stupid, even for a fast movie, but they tend to be reasonably well done.

Bad bits? Most of the actors/actress's are phoning it in, with ocasional actual effort. There's parts where even my suspention of disbelief can't cope, and I like the Fast movies. The named chariters are all super fighters, good enough to take down multiple armed spooks and mercenaries, even ones who we established as hopeless fighters in earlier movies, inc one who's been a housewife for the entire series. That was a bit much. But, there was one bit that I just couldn't get, at all.

Two latino chariters had a kid, in an earlier movie. Said kid is like, 8-10 in this one. And he's black. Like, no question, fully black, full negroid features. It just doesn't work at all.

If the kid was adopted, sure. But, there's supposed to be actual genetics there, and there's just none.

Shit, even for a action film.

I think because the mother is Brazilian they were going for that I guess?
In Fast 9 they had whiter skinned kids playing him.
Idk why thw change.
Can't find anything about it

For our Christmas Binge that's mostly been Netflix focused, watched several movies.

Extraction 2. Starring Chris Hemsworth and the sequel to the first action packed movie. I think I liked the first Extraction movie more and it had a stronger story and narrative. But the second movie was pretty good. It certainly delivered on the action and might've even topped it all over again. One of the long cut action sequences was apparently twenty one minutes long which is pretty crazy. And the action set pieces were nice. A classic Eastern European prison (Georgian prison actually), skyscraper in Vienna, and so on and so forth. Lots of action. Very entertaining. The villains were kinda meh. Some of the characters a little flat though I liked the protagonists a fair bit.

The Raid 2. An Indonesian martial arts, action and crime thriller. This came out in 2014 apparently but I never saw it. I liked the first Raid but some of the fight scenes, shockingly to me, were actually too long for my liking to the point of being tedious. But in this film that didn't actually happen. There were long martial arts scenes but they were good and entertaining. Unlike the first movie which was pretty straightforward, this one had lots of components of a crime thriller going on with the plot of an undercover cop going to work on a Mob Boss underling in an attempt to turn up criminal links with the local law enforcement whilst meanwhile there's gangland and police politicking going on. I wasn't feeling it at first but the narrative and plot actually won me over by the end of the film to the point I wished I was paying more attention to it during the slow development of said plot in the beginning. Overall a decent film and potentially a better film overall then the original.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Finally came around to watching it and I will have to say, I came in with very low expectations and this film surpassed them. I was surprised at how decent the film was. I don't know if it was good, but it was a serviceable sequel that still pales in comparison to the classic original trilogy. It might've been better then Crystal Skull actually which might be feint praise for some. The globe trotting set pieces around the world were interesting enough, but nothing was amazing. I feel the STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER and Emasculated Male stuff was fairly overstated and while their was some random quips that could be woke, it was nothing major. Everyone did a well enough job with the acting and characters. I did enjoy the ending act of the film however which boosts it a bit in the final calculus. Overall the film was entertaining, and fun, and there was some nostalgia. It was just... above average entertainment in the end though.

The biggest problem for me is the whole movie felt like a one long chase scene. They did a decent job with the action and not having Ford try to act like a 20 year old. I also agree that the strong female complaints where mainly overblown. Overall I ha e to say the movie is a lot better then Crystal Skull just for killing off Mutt. The worst character in the entire Franchise.

As for my holiday watching I saw Wonka. It was a fun movie and overall I would recommend it. It is a musical which should not surpise anyone and the arrangements inculde some of the original songs from the older movies. It manages to capture the spirit of Road Dahl books. The setting is that post Victorian look and maintains the feel thoughout the movie. Also Huge Grant killed it as the little orange man. Overall if you want a good family movie skip Disney failure Wish and hit Wonka instead.

I also watched Rebal Moon on Netflix. Overall it was subpar. The special effects where great and you could see thay it wanted to be a Space Opera like Dune.

But the movie fell short with interducing the wider world and tried to cram to much exposition in very simalr to what Suicide Squad tried to do. So the whole movie felt a little disjointed. The acting was average and the scenes where meh.

So you can see that they wanted to make a grand epic but just fell short in everything but special effects.

Yeah I generally agree with your assessment of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. I think the ending really pushed it over for me, but then it truncated it as well. I almost had chills when the quest reached its final climax and it was comparable to the ones you saw in the original trilogy IMHO. They did do a good job with Indy and his old self as well. Showing he had in fact aged. And despite maybe making him seem a bit too forlorn and miserly they did him good especially at the very, very end.

In regards to Crystal Skull the whole CIA Plot was also pretty wacky being tossed in with the whole multiple chase scenes, but I did enjoy Lars Mikkelsons Dr. Schmitt as a villain a fair bit more then the Soviet Agent that Blanchett played in the last film. Had a bit more gravitas and seemed more purposeful I feel.

Yeah I posted my thoughts on it yesterday in the Rebel Moon thread.

The film it most reminds me of is perhaps Chronicles of Riddick where Vin Diesel, after the deserved success of Pitch Black, tried to make his attempt at a space opera, a dark and gothic Star Wars but even his setting was more grounded. Neither film in either case was good in my humble opinion though they had their moments and I feel Vin Diesel's effort was more focused and a better film overall even though Rebel Moon had way more ambition with its world building and scope and scale and cast of characters.

I do think there's little nuggets of potential awesomeness in Snyder's vision but I'm not sure he's the one that should be directed his own vision, if that's what this is, to be honest. Rebel Moon was the most Snyder film yet and not for the better. He should do what Lucas did for The Empire Strikes Back and just co-pilot the vision he has. There's potential in the Rebel Moon setting.

I think that "failed space opera" has a basic style-over-substance problem. Rebel Moon and Chronicles of Riddick are both examples of this. Jupiter Ascending would be another. These all have their own issues, but essentially, these a ephemeral edifices, merely used as coat-hangers for "cool stuff"-- mostly in a visual sense. And even that fails, because the lack of coherence causes a lack of clear visual identity, too.

These films lack coherent plots, coherent world-building and coherent characterisation. There's style... but no substance. There's a glittering surface that hides the depth of puddle.

You get precisely what you'd expect in the event of Snyder doing a space opera: you get a lot of Snyder-isms in a vacuüm.

More Netflix Binging...

I saw One Piece, specifically the 2023 live action remake on Netflix. I'm barely aware of what One Piece is beyond random clips/episodes so I went in not knowing what to expect except being very leery of live action anime remakes. And the first ten minutes in I was thinking, it's okay... but it seems pretty goofy and silly and Luffy's powers are pretty random.

But it didn't take long for me to absolutely love the show. I usually am not big on this kind of irreverent tone for a show, but it totally worked here. I loved the setting of the world, the characters were all awesome and fun and I liked the style and its irreverent tone really won me over and they actually managed to strike a balance where the emotional beats still had solid impact despite the show seeming pretty goofy. I would highly recommend checking out this One Piece live action.

I can't speak to how faithful it is to the source material by and large, but I enjoyed it a lot more then the bits of One Piece anime I have seen and on its own merits its just a fantastically fun and entertaining show about pirates in some neat fantasy setting that has a lot of emotional heart to it along with a solid plot and really great characters and side storylines. Good messaging and themes as well.

Meg 2: The Trench. The real movie starts about eighty minutes in and ends about ten minutes later. That's when the prehistoric marine fauna attacks a resort. There's dumb action comedies but the action in here was exceptionally dumb. I guess it's entertaining. Giant Octopus terrorizing a bunch of Asian tourists in swim suits might hit a niche for some people. Not a good movie though. Go China!

Leave the World Behind. An Apocalyptic Thriller where the basic premise is a family of four goes out to this beachside mansion on Long Island for an AirBnB style vacation for the weekend. The film starts off as a slow burn but the tension just slowly increases with the strange happenings. Vehicle accidents. Strange animal behavior. Communication and internet outages. This is combined with the return of a couple who states they left New York City early due to a blackout which adds more mystery and tension to everything.

It took its time to slowly build up and ramp the tension of this unknown crisis that is going on and it is really effective with how isolated the main characters are from everything. Good acting with actually complex characters with complicated motivations and points of view and relationships. The film didn't quite stick the landing though, films of this kind rarely do, but it wasn't a bad ending. And the journey it took you on was more then well worth it. It just falls prey to the understandable desire of needing to explain things in order to get a conclusion.

It is not 1:1 adaptation, but those few episodes I had seen were certainly faithful to the spirit of the anime - and also portrayed characters accurately, in terms of personality, agency and appearance alike.

Wandea,Zwycięstwo albo śmierć - /Vandee,death or victory/ - french movue from 2022,i just wathed it.
