So what are you watching?

So the fall anime season has dropped and new shows are out. Overall a few shows like Spy vs. Family and other that look decent.

But I did start Frieren: Beyond Journey End.

It is a nice change of pace to find a fantasy anime that is not an isekai anime. It picks up with the group of heroes after they defeated the demon king. They are the stereotypical group with the elf magic user, dwarf, priest and main hero swordsman.

Then proceeds to follow the life the elf after the celebrations ends. It is a slice of life that follows the elf Freinen as she deals with her party members start getting old and dieing off. It also shows how her long life leads to a disconnection with humans and her journey to understand them and her relationship to the other party members.

The animation is bog standard and the voice acting is average. Both are decent with and serve the purpose snice the show is a character study.

This show is a unique take on part of fantasy world that we don't see. I have seen the frist 3 epsodies and will say it is worth a try.
Haven't watched a single episode of the anime yet, but I love the manga.

Saw Killers of the Flower Moon in theaters. It's Martin Scorsese's movie about the Osage (an American Indian tribe) Murders that occurred in Oklahoma during the 1920's after oil was struck on the Osage Reservation.

One of my friends really liked the movie so for once I feel like I was putting too high of expectations on the film since I typically love these love historical films but... it was very good. But it was also very long. And fairly slow. Similar to when I tried to watch The Irishman on Netflix. I was legit close to falling asleep in some scenes and there were a lot of slow scenes.

With all that said it was a pretty good film in spite of that. The trailers didn't actually spoil the film so when I watched it there was still plenty of surprises and twists and turns as I watched it. All of the acting was great, the film looked beautiful and the historical setting of 1920's Oklahoma Indian Territory was great to see onscreen. And it offered a really nice cinematic snapshot of the period. I'd recommend watching it, but keep in mind... it's a long movie and it's a slow movie.

The thing is... it was a gripping film that held my attention with what I was watching most of the time, but far from all the time. That is what makes long movies like this watchable, especially in movie theaters. Like I had no problem watching Oppernheimer recently. It kept me engrossed. This one didn't quite do it. Regardless though, it is as Scorsese says "cinema." :p
There was a clever thing he did with the epilogue as well which I actually liked so bonus points there.

I was thinking after watching a three and a half hour movie I'd have more to say but not really. It was almost like a miniseries in its scope with all of the characters. It could've either gone longer or shorter I feel and it would've likely been better for it IMHO overall.

Finally saw the first South Park I've probably seen in ages. Years at least... pre-Trump for sure.

And of course it was the Panderverse special since everyone was talking about it.

So watched it and I liked it. There were about four or five parts where I really laughed out loud which is kinda impressive since the special was like 45 minutes long or like two episodes.

The truly impressive thing was the diverse women of color universe alternatives. They did an amazing job designing them. Not just the physical design and behavior, but the cadence of their language and somehow making it "Woman of Color" accented. This was especially so with the new Eric Cartman. And it was great seeing all of the iconic South Park characters transformed into diverse Women of Color, including the "Chinese" proprietor of City Wok who also wasn't spared.

There was some good messaging in there. It dunked a lot on Disney and the industry as a whole and it also commented on the rage and anti-woke culture a bit as well with some salient observations that even tied into the secondary story (which was about AI making all of the white collar jobs obsolete and blue collar types turning into billionaires due to the lack of basic repair skill people have) by having all of these unemployed White professionals complaining it was actually Kathleen Kennedy's fault that their lives were ruined, not their own responsibility. ;)

It was also amusing seeing how different people reacted to the sassy Black Adult Female Eric Cartman. The conversation with PC Principal was full of irony and very on point. But it was interesting seeing how a lot of adults (casual normies) didn't seem to give a fuck about Eric Cartman's race and gender swap.

Ending left me speechless as well. Like whoa... that went hard. :p

Overall it was a good episode. Worth a watch instead of watching some video summary or commentary on it (which I will do now that I've seen it).

Didn't motivate me to keep watching South Park tho...

I feel like I need to get back into South Park. Haven't watched it much in the past 5 years.

Yeah I don't think the Panderverse special motivated me to start watching new South Park again, but we'll see. They really seemed to drop the ball with the 2016 election storylines. I never watched it but I heard it really derailed their idea of season long story arcs when Trump won. I used to watch it a fair bit back when I had Cable Television though.

Ya, I stopped around that time too. While I was not reglious in watching snice chef dying off I still saw most of the episodes. But it took a big dip in quality and I just stopped.

I did just watch the new Little Mermaid. It is not great and making Arial black is only a small part of what is wrong with the movie.

Frist they had to make changes for no good reason like Mulan or Aladdin. They added that men killed Arial's mother which is why she is banned from interacting with them. They also cut the whole body language part of Ursula song. Which is a shame snice it really helped sell thay Ursula is very cynical and defines her a villain.

Then you have only one good singer. For all the hollywood must replace every red head with a black person she is a good singer and does do justice to her musical numbers.

Also the new songs are very lackluster. The frist is basically a live stream of Arial going on land. Prince Erics number also os just pointless and does nothing to really expand the plot or describe him a character.

Then you get to the making Scuttle a female voiced by Awkafina. Who while a decent actor in Fresh off the Boat and Crazy Rich Asians just failed here.

The CGI is cheap looking for a Disney blockbuster movie.

So really the whole movie is a mess and it is little wonder why it disappeared into Disney + so quick.

Yeah I just watched that South Park: Streaming Wars special today from a couple years back and it was... fine... like... Nice metaphor for uhhh streaming services but... I don't think I'll be going back to watching or binging South Park anytime soon. It just doesn't have that special satirical quality anymore with how it skewered the modern day.

Maybe I'll watch their Covid Special thing... I dunno.

Has anyone seen the new Night Court yet? I know they have Jon Laroquette reprising his role as Dan.

I watched it. Overall not bad but it was slightly canned. The plot in general are the standard sitcom plotlines and the show is mainly episodic.

I did laugh at times and new cast in general does a decent job but it is only average compared to the older version.

I didn't even know it was a thing.
Yes, Melissa Rauch, Bernice from BBT, is playing Abigail Stone. Harry Stones daughter. Who takes his old job at Night Court in NYC. Dan Fielding , Jon Larroquette, is the public defender and a recent widower. Supposedly he has renounced his skirt chasing ways but remains a deadpan snarker.

I think modern culture can be blamed for that: Imagine the sheer amount of complaints from thin-skinned Millennials and younger generations, if there were a character that were lecherous towards women.

I don't actually watch much television series. It's almost all YouTube. I don't like watching TV series until they're finished or something. But yeah currently I'm using and abusing Disney+ for all of that Star Wars content I missed. All three shows have been great so far... with Rebels being surprisingly high quality after a kind of childish and lackluster first season.

Clone Wars especially gets MUCH better and less kiddie as it goes.

The Bad Batch is lumped in there too. It deals with some adult themes with taking place like, immediately at the beginning the Empire. It sometimes leads to some... good tries? I laughed a bit an early episode, to show how evil the Empire was people needed to... show ID to board a transport. How dastardly evil!

I have a few reservations about this but...I also have hopes. Fox is making a miniseries called Shogun.

I have read the book and I have seen the origional miniseries.

Hoping the woke crowd couldn't touch it.

"What, no Black*, queer, White**, or women samurai? A man in charge? Patriarchy! Must be modernized for the Greater Good!"

*Yes, I am aware of Yasuki (Black) and Anjin (White), but they were literally one of a kind outliers.
**Actually, given that most woke ideology is anti-White racism, I shouldn't have added in White samurai.

Not to mention that accurately portraying what happened with Yasuke would have its own issues.

I mean, if you portrayed it historically accurately, people would complain about the portrayal being racist towards both Japanese and Africans.

Japanese people were so shocked at seeing a black person that some people were literally trampled to death by crowds hoping to catch a glimpse... and then Yasuke was spared Honno-ji Incident because the Japanese saw blacks as bestial and didn't want to kill him.

Not to mention that any black people in Japan at that time would've been Portuguese servants, at least initially.

The 1500s was racist, yo.

Oh yeah, it'd ignite the typical woke racist powderkeg, no question.

Anyway, not so much as watching as I am reading (on YouTube) the Eminence in Shadow manga (scattered clips).

I can't stop fucking laughing at the John Smith arc.

"The last thing he said was Yuki, pointing to the snow, so the gold must be here!"

No, Cid. facepalm He was talking about the character Yuki, his ex-lover, who he was pointing at as he died. And you should turn one of those holes into a grave, like what Yuki and Alpha are thinking.

I wasn't aware it was a thing until the lads at Red Letter Media informed me that the new Night Court reboot was streaming on Peacock and they did a "watch/review" of the pilot episode.

It wasn't flattering but these Wisconsinite grognards don't like modern sitcoms for the most part anyways. Still a funny 'reaction' video though. And it was nice that Mr. Plinkett finally got to see Night Court after waiting so long.
