Got together with friends to do grilling-foods, Cards against Humanity, and a Mel Brooks movie marathon for gits and shiggles. Man was a fantastic director/writer, and Blazing Saddles is still a masterpiece of a satire that really hits both the western genre and racism. I adore that movie and just about everything about it--and introducing a few new folks who'd never seen it before was all kinds of fun--and the same story goes for History of the World, Pt. 1.

One of his I'd never seen before (or even HEARD of, honestly) was High Anxiety, which in a slightly more understated way does the same thing Blazing Saddles did for westerns to thriller films in general and particularly Hitchcock films--there's probably a half-dozen gags in the movie based around dramatic and oddball camera-angles and camera-progressions through a scene and it's a lot of very campy, amusing dumbness (that has Brooks in a lead role as well--which is also fun) and even more tongue-in-cheek 'as you know' explanations and plot-hook setups that are so prominent in Hitchcock movies (it might've suffered a bit in the modern day because the particular style it's parodying has become a bit less common since...well, Hitchcock's death...But still a lot of fun).

Mel Brooks movies are great. His spoofs like Men in Tights and Spaceballs actually have a decent plot. Unlike Scary Movie and Not Yet Another... movies you have something that takes the themes and fan jokes into a plotline people can enjoy without ever seeing the source work.

As for new stuff I am watching.

The Middle on Prime.

This is a 30 minute sitcom about a lower middle class family living in rural Indiana that was on form 2009 to 2018.

I personally like it snice a lot of the jokes hit home. Just like Friends showcases New York in the 90s The Middle does the same with Midwest living in the early 2000s. Thi gs like the roofing party epsoide or local town craziness are things I remember from growing up.

The cast also has some decent actors/actresses. Patricia Heaton from Everybody Loves Raymond and Neil Flynn from Scurbs are the parents and really sell the whole relationship.

Overall it is a fun show that follows the kids though school and into adult life. It deal with issues from jobs leaving to struggling to make ends meet. It reminds me a lot of Malcome in the Middle with a different take and updated for the times.

I watched a few Star Trek Voyager and DS9 episodes yesterday.

Finished watching Kingdom a few weeks ago. Fantastic Korean television series produced by Netflix. It takes place in early 17th century Joseon Korea after the Imjin War during a ZOMBIE OUTBREAK!

It's every bit as awesome as it sounds. It's high production values with lots of characters, good set designs and costumes and everything for the setting. The characters for the most part are great though there's some bad ones inasmuch they're too strong of caricatures or stereotypes.

Plus the Zombie plague, while terrifying and well setup, is only one piece of the drama since its literally an adjunct story line to a plot of intrigue and dynastic succession between the Crown Prince and a "Step mother" Queen style rival to the throne.

Among other themes like the legacy of the devastating Imjin War, class struggles and so forth. There's even some parallels to the Super popular Zombie film Train to Busan which if you liked, you'll probably appreciate this TV series as well.

Watched the first four episodes of the Korean TV series Kingdom on Netflix. It's pretty good. Definitely entertaining enough to keep my interest for that many episodes at least. It deals with a zombie style disease outbreak in turn of the (17th) century Joseon Korea. Fun characters. The humor is overbearing (very Asian in that regard) to the point of almost being disappointing caricature and a lot of the human on human combat is kind of a bit too arthouse/wuxia vein for me... just a bit too operatic.

But I am still seriously digging the series because of its 'monster' designs and the whole concept of the disease, its origins so far, and how the infected behave. Plus the action scenes and everything involving them are very top notch and just great treats to watch. On a supporting level, I do have an actual larger interest in seeing the interplay of politics playing out, though it's still a but of a sophomoric distraction for me.

Overall, I do enjoy the show immensely though. Definitely holds my interest more then a lot of contemporary zombie media.

Also... on the second to last Season of Homeland. Nothing was as good as the first two seasons, but it's still a good series keeping things relatively fresh by switching it all up from literal season to season.

The Kingdom does sound interesting. With this pandemic causing me to get though my watch list I may have to look int ol getting Netflix again. I dropped when I wasn't using it to save money. But there is a lot on there that I want to see now.

So I just rewatched Atlantis the Lost Empire.

I know this movie has mainly been lost to Disney's past snice Kida is not part of the Princess line and the movie did only mediocre overall. But I feel this and Treasure Planet are forgotten gems that Diseny should have given a bit more effort too. But this departure of animated movies that where not musical and outside Disney's core focus left little will to continue things like the T.V. spin off.

This movie has a good level of attention to detail. They managed to get a mix of Steampunk and Dieselpunk mixed in. You can also see the influence the writers took from Jules Verne. This really feel like the movie it took place in 1914.

Then you get into the fact they made up a language for the movie. This is something that adds to the detail and let's you have the translation scene when Milo meets Kida.

The overall movie is a fun action adventure with the villains having more depth then normal Disney movie. Not to mention heros are standout with Kida being more active then ones like Cinderella. Kida has some great lines like telling Mio "You are a scholar, are you not? Judging from your diminished physique and large forehead, you are suited for nothing else!"

The cast is well developed and the humor can be dry. The charater's interactions feel real and the night time crew antics are simalr to things that I have seen in real life.

Not to mention some side references to Radio which is always a good thing.

But if you have not seen this movie I would said it is a most watch for anyone who likes Animated movies.

So after watching Atlantis the Lost Empire I decided to hit up another older disney animated movie.

Treasure Planet.

It is a remake of Treasure Island and is fairly well done. It is also another Disney animated movie that stepped out of the box in not being a musical. It also is similar animation style to Atlantis and other late 90's and early 2000's animation. I personally like this style of animation and think it is far superior to the new styles seen in She Ra and Steven Universe.

But the moive does come with some problems. Most of the action is in the last arc and has a slow build up. While I did not mind a younger audience might. Also I thought that B.E.N. was over the top and added a to late to feel like anything but a comedy ad on.

But it does have some high points too. David Hyde Pierce is great and his charater has some great lines. Also the other charaters like Hawkins and Captain Amelia along with Sliver form a strong central cast.

Sliver as a villain is a mixed bag. I do like that he is one of the more complex villains Disney has ever done. But the montage to show his change of heart to Hawkins really is a bit to much on the tell side. I would say the relationship between Hawkins and Sliver is one of the stronger parts of the movie.

Overal the movies has some flaws it is still fun to watch. But unlike Atlantis I can see why this one did not do so well at the blockoffice.

I loved Treasure Planet as a kid, though I might be biased. The only raffle I ever won was a free tickets for my entire class to see it in a movie theater.

It is a good movie but it has some flaws. Some of it from being older then the target audience. Overall while not a classic to me I would still rewatch online a lit of stuff I see.

Oh, I should add that I found this gem in a random Target, and just had to buy it:

The problem? It's too good to hold my interest. I really wanted something that was utter crap and balls to the wall (like Iron Sky), but this had about a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's like a competent filmmaker trying to see what the best movie he could make out of the most outrageous title. I'm utterly unsure if I can recommend it.

It does sound like an independent flim movie. The general plot from the wiki sounds crazy. But like Sci Fi channels monster movies is most likely best watched half drunk.

That's the thing, it wasn't one of those drunk movies. It was too serious for its stupid premise.

I heard of the film before and now I'm just intrigued simply from how you've presented it. It seems rather novel at the very least and maybe a high YMMV type of film as well which can be... well YMMV.

Plus Sam Elliot and Ron Livingstone are pretty good actors to watch...

I like how its wiki page didn't even classify it as a comedy, which shows how serious it apparently does take itself. ;)

I've held off watching series for a while now since I got too much else on my plate at the moment and don't want to start something that I can't finish.

Not only is Starship Troopers on Netflix. But last night I noticed TOTAL RECALL is on Netflix! I watched it and loved it. If you haven't seen it in a while, watch it again.

I was on such a Verhoeven kick that I then decided to search for Robocop since good things happen in threes.

And what did I find?

MORTAL KOMBAT! (Robocop was not on Netflix and for some reason Mortal Kombat was the top suggestion)

Not a good movie perhaps... but a very entertaining one that knows exactly what it's doing and thus in turn... actually a good movie! (y)

It has been a long time since I have seen Mortal Kombat but I remember it as a fun time waster.

The frist total Recall is much better then the remake. The mind games actually make some interesting plotlines. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger acting didn't hurt the moive to much.

So I finished up Chihayafuru(sport anime about a card game), The Middle(good replacement for anyone missing Last Man Standing) and Farscape.

Farscape gave me some mixed feelings. The main cast is great with the relationship between Ben Browder and Claudia Black as one of the high points of the show. The special effects are well done with some great puppetry.

But the major plot can get lost. The frist part about running from the Peacekeepers is engaging but the Scarrans plotlines are when the show starts to go down hill a bit. The parts with the mind clone Harvey got a bit old.

But overall for an older show it holds up well. It has multiple interwoven plots, charater drama and relationship that are realistic. But as with most shows the last seasons and the mini series ended up not at the level of season one. But it is a complete series with an ending and few lose ends.

I am about to start DS9. I have seen most of the show but missed part and saw it out of order. So I am finally going to see the whole thing in order. I am also looking at start Dear Devil. I have not see any of the Marvel Netflix exclusive shows. But I liked Agent Carter and Agents of Sheild and have heard good things about most of them.
