I think what unsettled most people about Rush Limbaugh was that he was completely unapologetic about his viewpoints. He based them generally off common sense and logic and combined that with the historical evidence that 200 years of our Republic gave him.
He had no problem calling out stupidity. That made some people uncomfortable.
Rush was also very comfortable talking to people with differing points of view, and would attempt to show them what conservative values really meant, not what the Left said they meant.
That didn't change through all the years of his broadcasting.
