Folk Islam in rural Indonesia has some Hindu and pre Hindu elements in it. That form of Islam is going away due to modernization and urbanization.

from what i've read Iran is in the opposite boat of Saudi Arabia. Iran has a fundamentalist government and a comparatively moderate population especially amongst the youth but Saudi Arabia has a comparatively moderate government and a far more fundamentalist people. Comparatively is the operative word here.

Well there is always one thing both can agree on: blame the Jews for every little thing under the sun.
I've come to really feel the majority of Middle Eastern (and Iranian) governments are run by white supremecist, neo-nazi, "alt-right" (whatever that means), Muslim Identitarian (for the monarchies & Iranians), KKK'ers who get butt kissed by everyone because they have oil.
Pundits on various sides then try to present one massively anti-semitic group who is very, very, very slightly "moderate" (not really) as being so different from another massively anti-semitic group.
When in reality both would probably blow up Jews just because.

Most Indonesian Muslims seem pretty chill. There's one famous one named Barack Hussein Obama, who could almost pass for a Christian.
