In someways, probably. In other ways, probably more 'progressive' (in the good sense, not the stupid) than normal 1945 America. The military was more integrated than the US at the time, though it was not fully integrated until 1948. Also, there were a number of gay service members as well that no one much cared about.I get the feeling that due to the time period in which they existed in most of the shipgirls would be rather conservative by today's standards no matter the nation they come from.
There's a funny story that Eisenhower found out that there were a lot of lesbians in the WACS and other female military groups, and wanted a list typed up so that they could be discharged. Immediately a nearby WAC said that she'd be at the top of the list, but then was told by Eisenhower's secretary that "You'll be second, I'm typing the list." Thus ended the campaign to get lesbians out of the WAC.
