Ethiopian food cuisine is delicious.

I mean... granted... actually having food in the first place is still problematic...

One of my friends entire family worked as missionaries in Ethiopia for years, always showing us pictures and videos of their travels and adventures and yes, the food they were able to have over there.

They have all sorts of amazing ethnic dishes with random spices and herbs I could never keep track of. Everything on the injera is probably absolutely fucking delicious though. The meme reminds me of how in Iron Chef they'd give you points for plating... which was worth half of the points for TASTE. It was like smug food elitism. :p

Oh man.. now I want one of those random lamb dishes served on a bed of rice with dollops of random sauces and cooked vegetables now... but I don't remember the names of any of the dishes. 😭

That's not a good choke hold at all though.
You generally want more of the bicep to be invovled then is there.
And wasn't the fact that he was overweight help lead to his death?

There were two egregious parts to it.

1. That the cigarette tax was so high a man could make meaningful income selling singular cigarettes without paying the tax.
2. That force, which unintentionally turned deadly, was used to enforce such a pathetically petty law.
Yeah. He shouldn't have died and the tax shouldn't have been in place.

This runs into the classic 'Eggshell skull theory'. Basically, if you punch someone, and they have a pre-existing condition like an eggshell thin skull, and you kill them, you are still guilty. Now what level of guilt that might be might vary (if you didn't intend to kill them, usually voluntary manslaughter, depending on state), but you are still guilty of some sort of homicide (assuming no self-defense, etc).

In short, any unexpected frailty of the victim is not a legal defense. And any expected frailty is also not a defense, because then you acted on that info.

Now this might not apply to the George Floyd case because the argument could be made that George Floyd was dying regardless of the cop due to a Fentanyl OD, and the cop didn't accelerate it. But if he would have survived the OD but the cop's rough handling pushed him just enough? Then yeah, that might be a homicide.

But with Eric Gardner? There was no other possible cause. So Eggshell Skull applies, and the cop did a homicide.

Eric Gardner was selling single cigarettes (loosies) in NYC. He also wasn't on drugs and was put in a chokehold, unlike George Floyd.
interestingly wokepedia claims that he was not actually selling singles (which is smuggling/tax evasion) but that was a long harassment campaign by the police against him that spanned years over false pretenses.

bucket of salt because of the source.
But if true, it would suggest he made an enemy of someone powerful who then sicced the police on him.

Also, while the cops choking him were white, their supervisor (who is a black woman) was standing nearby and watching the entire thing without at any point telling them to ease up.

I'm personally calling BS on that, he probably was still selling them. I'm not saying the dude was a saint, more pointing out that cops will kill for even the most petty of laws.

I doubt someone had it out for him. Or at least no one important, I'm sure a cop may have had an issue. If you give someone the power to enforce rules (no matter how stupid or arbitrary) they will enforce them gleefully.

Yeah, female cops are the most likely to get you killed IMO.

Just so folks understand how ridiculous New York tobacco taxes are.

New York state, this year, adds ~$4.35 per pack, which makes a pack of 20 cigarettes cost $10.45 on average (there's obviously going to be some variance based on brand, etc.).

How high is this? It's highest in the country. Now, here's where it gets stupid and one of the reasons why you have so much tobacco smuggling into New York city: just a few hundred miles away sits little ol' Virginia with its 50th lowest tobacco taxes in the country, with a tax of $0.30 per pack... making a pack cost about $4.78.

Yes, New York city tobacco taxes more than DOUBLE the price of a pack of cigarettes from Virginia. Even adding on the price of gas, a single carload of cigarettes from Virginia smuggled into NYC can be sold for a KILLER profit provided you don't get caught. You can put a 50% markup on smuggled Virginia cigarettes and you are STILL underselling the price of legal cigarettes in NYC. And bear in mind how many PACKS of cigarettes you can move in a single average car. A pack of cigarettes is the same size as a pack of cards, and weights less. You can easily move tens of thousands of dollars worth of product in an single trip in an average car... get a panel van and you can move millions...

Other options to smuggle from are Delaware (average total price per pack $5.50) and New Hampshire (average total price per pack $5.81) also make good places to smuggle from, not sure how much the saved gas vs the lower Virginia price pans out though.

You can make even more of a profit if you have connections to Indian reservation where they don't tax the sale of tobacco products AT ALL and thus avoid the Federal taxes too (which you're still paying in Virginia), which if avoided further reduce the price per pack between $1.01 to $2.11 depending on the type of cigarette.

So yeah, NYC has basically created the perfect storm for a black market to appear with their ridiculous taxes on cigarettes... and then go around and blame everyone but themselves for the problems it causes. And no, I'm not just talking about the individuals who take advantage of those cost differences, NYC also loves blaming the other states that refuse to tax tobacco as high as they do.

Not a capital offense, but selling cigarettes outside of a convenience store which is selling them is kind of a trashy thing to do as well which is IIRC, was part of the reason for "harassment" by law enforcement.
