I pursued a philosophy degree because I wanted to better understand how individuals build up the foundation for how they think, how they come to the conclusions they do.

It's not a worthless field. Like in any field, you have to be careful who you listen to and trust to mentor you. In philosophy, you MUST learn to think things through and argue against your own foundations. Anyone that doesn't do that and claims to be a philosopher is just a poser trying to sound smart. Unfortunately, there are many of those in higher ed.

That's a problem with higher ed: To many Ph.D's your degree means more than what you actually know.

Our receptionest doesn't have a college degree but knows enough about what's going on that when I need to write a spec book my office inbox has all of the spec sections I'm about to edit using several colours of Sharpie ink without me even telling her which portions of the masterspec I need.

There's a reason why asking her to work overtime is $77/hour.

EDIT: I just looked up military pay rates. Our receptionist is more highly paid than a US Navy Captain or a US Army Colonel.

Brave New World described it quite well, from the state control over child-rearing, to the widespread use of government-sanctioned narcotics for 'holidays', to the batshit insane consumerism and rutting to keep the NPCs sedated. The first part was spot-on about how the NPC reacted when it was deprived of its feelz-box.
