I had plenty of stuff stored on floppy discs I'll never be able to use again because nobody uses floppy drives
USB-connected floppy drives are under $50, according to Amazon, because they were in fact still in use for thoroughly compatible formats.

put a lot of my college data on ZIP drives that haven't been readable in years
People have updated the drivers for Windows 10, and supporting Linux distributions shouldn't be hard to find with a basic dating check. There's also original-production USB-compatible Zip drives.

and burned many a CD that just spams error messages when read today.
This is one is almost certainly unsolvable medium degradation, but the other two are rather easily solved with basically any effort looking into it.

Just because fresh production machines do not come right out of the package supporting it, does not in any way mean it's lost media. If it takes more than a week and $500 dollars, then you can complain, but under 30 minutes and $50 dollars to order is just "no longer standard".

Seriously, have you tried at all to get the first two working, or are you just complaining that the slots aren't on the tower anymore?

Kinda, some formats have withstood the test of time better than others but you're still going to have the issue that either WORM CDs lose their data and become unreadable after a few years, and/or the disc drive to read the media your ASCII is on isn't compatible with any modern hardware so you'll have to find some antique computer that can still read your media. I had plenty of stuff stored on floppy discs I'll never be able to use again because nobody uses floppy drives, put a lot of my college data on ZIP drives that haven't been readable in years, and burned many a CD that just spams error messages when read today.
I still have CDs & old jazz albums.

You know, paper tends to rot eventually as well; especially if you don't take care of it. The smart thing to have done would have been to back up that data on something more recent before it became unusable, and download an emulation program like DOSbox so that you can still access it on newer systems.

Associated Press released some interesting tweets regarding their writing style to adopt as journalists.

These "college-educated" Journalists thankfully retracted their Francophobic terminology suggestions.

The original tweet was deleted but the Internet doesn't forget.

It's funny to me. This is the first time I've heard of Hamilton-68. Goes to show how much MSM I consume I guess.

We knew it was fake at the time. Do you know how many times I have been called a Russian Bot on FB and Reddit? It inspired my user title on here...

I would get called a Russian bot daily...I'm just like no dude, we are real people. There are real people who hold different opinions than you.

They just couldn't fathom it.

Iowa lawmakers say proposed bill would add education transparency for parents

Lawmakers say a bill in the Iowa legislature would add transparency for parents in their children's education.

It would require school districts to give parents access to a list of all materials in their school library.

The bill would give parents the power to request their child to not check out certain materials.

And districts would have to make it easy and accessible for parents to request to have a certain book reviewed or removed.

‘Mean-spirited’ bill restricting how teachers can support transgender students moves quickly through Iowa House

On Tuesday afternoon, the three members of an Iowa House subcommittee listened to an hour of testimony on HF 9, a bill aimed at preventing teachers and other school staff from acknowledging the identities of transgender students unless they first receive parental permission to do so.

With only a few exceptions, the speakers testified strongly against the bill. They explained how it would put vulnerable students at risk. How lack of support puts transgender kids at heightened risk of suicide and substance abuse. How parents who reject those students can become violent, or force them to leave home. And how the bill would rupture the bond of trust that schools try to develop between students and teacher, so students feel free to discuss difficult issues with a trusted adult. None of these things are controversial — all are well-attested to by decades of study — and some pointed out that the bill likely violates existing Iowa laws against discrimination in education and Title IX of the federal code.

The first is from the Cedar Rapids, IA ABC television station.

The second is, per their about page:
Little Village said:
Little Village is a monthly news and culture magazine, distributed free, covering Iowa from a refreshing perspective. With offices in Iowa City and Des Moines, LV produces two distinct monthly print editions to serve the Eastern and Central Iowa areas.

If it's like the free papers of a similar bent I've seen on racks at coffee shops, restaurants, &c since the late 90's the majority of their revenue comes from personals and ads for products, establishments, and services of a libertine/adult/NSFW nature.

Guess which one I'd trust ...

I was never into this guy, so forgive me if I am wrong here, but in the 90's and 00's Bill Maher was pretty left wing, right? Like, he would have been considered a left end liberal rather than a classical liberal. Yet, in this clip from a few days ago he's saying stuff that is to the right of what classical liberals say.

Apparently he got moved over to CNN to try to help save it from bankruptcy, with it's new and rather more conservative head. Also, as I said, I am not too familiar with his content, so I can't say how odd this is for him or if he's been slanting more and more this way for a while. However, I do know that Clownfish TV, when they talked about the CNN issue, laughed at the Leftists who called him Right-Wing, which says to me that any change in his stances are either rather recent or localized onto specific issues.
