I just saw The Marvels this morning whilst doing housework and it was alright. Like a lot of the films it distilled Marvel Humor derived from Guardians of the Galaxy which infested this film throughout. The lighthearted tone and humor did land more then I expected it to of course, and I did actually like all of the main characters and their interactions with each other. Good chemistry.

Everything else for the most part was pretty meh though. The power switching/teleportation actually never got old and in the many action scenes that schtick was actually the highlight of those scenes because a lot of the action bits weren't really anything special. To the films credit it didn't seem as filled with CGI noise as other recent major films. But it wasn't impressive or anything. The best scenes were the ones focused on the the characters melee'ing each other and whatnot.

The Marvel villain... uhhh Dar-Benn? She was okay. Actress did an alright job but Ronan had more presence. And her assistant had a man bun which kind of distracted me. Kree never struck me as very hipster. With that said though, I did like the Kree designs here, we got female Kree troopers with the cute blonde ponytails sticking out of the back of their helmets as they oppress lesser species like in the comics. That was nice.

The biggest drawback of this film was that it was basically a lighthearted superhero film with comedic elements. Like I said before the humor landed far more than I expected. The wit seemed more natural. So when the film tried not to be a comedy and tackle serious topics like planetary scale genocide and deeply personal trauma and loss, the scenes weren't filled with cringey narm, they just fell kinda flat instead which was a relief.

The only action scene I did think was decent was the final one with the main villain where the three heroines teamed up on the bad Kree Lady and used their insta-teleportation switching and vaguely defined but clearly different light based powers in reasonably intelligent ways to overwhelm and keep the villain off guard. A lot of superhero films lack clever use of superpowers in most cases so this was nice.

Also the film had a prolonged musical act in the middle of the film which... I'm not sure how I feel about though the originality of the concept is growing on me as I think back on it. The idea of aliens having a singing style language is kind of a neat concept.

Overall, it was mildly entertaining. Somewhat humorous. Maybe potentially above average but still not good. But also not bad, except maybe compared with other MCU films of the earlier phases.

Probably more like a comedic send off the the universe IMO

As Multiverses go... this film clearly would be the way to do it, with some Merc with a Mouth being employed as Marvel Jesus and going through the various convoluted storylines and in semi-random encounters killing and skewering enemies as well as recent Phase Four/Five themes and plot devices that have been overused now.

At worst this film can be like Spider-Man: No Way Home in a solid, successful and well received film that fails to qualitatively impact the MCU at large, or the Studios could use it as a lowkey reset button for their Multiverse Saga or whatever now that it's in utter shambles thanks to the endless connections between Disney Plus shows and movies, lackluster film reception in general as well as Kang's actor getting dumped from the MCU.

They could use this as an opportunity to be better. And while I doubt they can take this year long break where only this film is coming out for Marvel films to their advantage for improving MCU quality, it's certainly possible they could. They have the potential to use this film as an opportunity to make MCU films betterer again in 2025 or whatever.

I do think the best case scenario is a Spiderman No way home scenario. It can potentially be a good and funny film but the superhero genre has just really overstayed its welcome IMO.

Deadpool and Wolverine accidentally killing Kang the Conqueror as a side-gag to explain why the MCU's supposedly next "Big Bad" is no longer the Big Bad would be hilarious, and it'd fit as a good way as to explain why the actor is no longer in the MCU (he got domestic abuse convictions).

Certainly not inspiring me with confidence for 2025.

Vanessa Kirby for Susan Storm is fine I guess. Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards? I guess John Krasinski was just too perfectly cast that they had to pull back. I have nothing against Pedro Pascal. He's a fine actor. I'm just bored with him being cast as everything.

Yeah this is fucking stupid. This movie is already so passed due that I doubt many are still interested and they do this to ice the cake.

Completely unsubstantiated and unconfirmed rumor that Henry Cavill will portray Captain Britain in the MCU.

Despite the fact this is almost certainly not true, it's the most exciting news to come out of Marvel in at least one and a half phases.

I was planning on watching Madame Web in spite of the poor reviews just to check it out and my partner wanted to see it for the plot after seeing how talented the cast looked when photographed on the red carpet of their premiere.

But one of my friends linked me one of those 'Pitch Meeting' videos which basically broke down the plot and it didn't just sound bad, but also kind of boring to be honest. Which I wouldn't want to endure in a theater.

With that said, the rule for Pitch Meeting videos is the worse the movie, the better the Pitch Meeting video about it because that was one of the more hilarious ones.

What really killed it for me is SPOILERS that the three Spider-Women don't even show up in costume except in flash forward scenes so they don't even get their powers in this film and the climax just takes place in a fireworks factory which sounds lameasf. Some Soap Opera villain Spider-man stalking normal people for most of the movie just sounds terribly boring.

EVEN THEN, I might've had a shred of interest seeing it, but then one of the printed reviews stated that the acting was actually pretty bad. Like they were just line reading. One thing I generally concede to even bad blockbuster movies is, the actors and actresses and stuff usually do a pretty good job acting even if the movie, or yes even their own characters, are terrible or terribly written. The fact that the cast apparently put more effort into acting in the marketing materials with their tongue in cheek quips and such as opposed to just phoning it in for the movie is pretty sad. Not even worth a good Bad Movie Watch.

Chris Stuckmann talked about this sort of Studio Filmmaking going on at Sony especially but other studios as well where it seems like studios are just meddling too much in trying to create a perfect formula to cater to Cinematic Universes or what would be good for streaming and other decisions driven by shallow marketing algorithms.

I'll probably expend my free ticket on Land of Bad or something.

Doesn't he already have commitments producing the Eisenhorn series?

It's not true but if it was Pedro Pascal has like fifty projects going on right now so practically speaking the only people who would suffer are the fans from unusually long delay times between their favorite projects.

It's sort of funny that Hollywood hasn't figured it out yet but Superhero movies are and always have basically been the male equivalent of what the Vampire genre is for women.
Shhhhhhhhh. Next you will have LGBQXYZ Lesbian Vampire that was a former guy and he sparkles in the sunlight plus only drinks animal blood.

In other words a modern version of Twilight.
