I was thinking more they'd double down on the Red Scare (although it's not so much a "scare" now in hindsight, is it?), and anyone who had communist leanings would end up in "hunting accidents" than just being ostracized.

I learned about it in school, history books say it was a pointless anti communist "panic" that resulted in innocent definitely not communists being persecuted... except not really.
Their only example is mccarthy who... was absolutely correct. They destroyed his career trying to make him out as a witch hunter when in fact he was going after actual KGB infiltrators.
As was proven when USSR fell and declassified documents showed that those were actual real KGB infiltrators who infiltrated schools and churches to destroy america from within.
McCarthy will likely be looked at much more favorably by historian's 80 years from now.

McCarthy was played for a fool in the 2nd Red Scare. The US was crawling with Soviet spies and he found like 4, out of the 100s he accused.

Well, every government since the Kaiser Germany has had was socialist of some stripe or other. Which certainly played a part.
Every (And I mean every) nation's leaders are basically either cultists, pedos, or cultist pedos. And if the common people figured that out, they'd be out of the job (and out of life) within days.
So, the logical choice is make the common people into cultists, pedos, or cultist pedos. Hence the massive shift towards making it acceptable.
