One thread went on for more than a dozen pages.
. “One of the big things that hit me running for office is that when you Google my name, Kiwi Farms is one of the first things that shows up,” said Brianna Wu, a video game developer and former congressional candidate who was also a major target of Gamergate. “It’s hard when you have these people who create your reputation in a way that permanently damages it,” she added.
Striking while the iron is ice cold, I see.
I like how they admit the farms will make fun of literally everyone, but then doubled
back and insist that no, they're actually a reactionary far right forum because....uh....they say no-no words.
Oh no. A dozen pages.
Yeah, I don't think the farms is responsible for destroying Wu's reputation. That was self inflicted, the farms just maintains a record of it for the world to see (which might explain why Wu wants them gone, if MJ had bothered to ask). The idea that an employeer would shy away from hiring you because your name is mentioned on a internet harassment forum is highly dubious. The idea that they'd shy away because of your overall behavior and you're using the forum as a scapegoat....that's a bit more dubious.
Edit: I think the most irritating part of these articles is them constantly taking this people's word at face value, and just assuming that not only did everything they say happened, it happened because of the farms. Nearly everyone quoted in that article has a years long record of being an abrasive jerk online, they have no shortage of enemies, anyone of whom could have dome that stuff (assuming, again, that it actually happened).
The article also doesn't mention that the farms explicitly ban any sort of trolling plans or organized efforts to screw with people, nor make any effort to see if that's actually something they follow, which I would guess it is. Patrick Tomlinson and MovieBob both have threads on the farms, in the same subforum and of a similar level of activity, and both men fit the same general mold (stupid fat white guys who spend way to much time on twiter ranting about politics). The only difference is that Tomlinson is in the crosshairs of another site that doesn't have the farms rule about no trolling. He is subject to constant prank calls and has had the police called to his home several times, while Bob is largely left alone.
Some lolcowery from Keffels awhile back. I heard people gibbering it was trying to turn its Subreddit into Kiwifarms 2.0 but didn't realize how literal it was.
Also I heard Kiwifarms is doing a lot better now. Is that true?
Spite can be a powerful motivator.the farms is hard to kill and now has a grudge to survive on.

Which *clears throat* is why you don't call for "gatekeeping".That's the thing. By not engaging in good-faith arguments they are able to choose the literary terms of engagement. Redefining language to via publications in academia and slang (same thing basically) till you are speaking different dialects and your words are being used against you.
If you don't gatekeep to an extent, however, you end up being infiltrated and taken from the inside out like a virus or, well, The Thing.Which *clears throat* is why you don't call for "gatekeeping".
Quite the opposite, this is why you have to gatekeep.Which *clears throat* is why you don't call for "gatekeeping".

This has happened to so many hobbyist communities and sites.
Trading card games? Dice, pen, and paper role-playing games? Certain video game communities? Comics? Cartoons? Perfect examples, especially in the last decade or so.
It is a balancing act. You need to gatekeep enough to avoid parasites and trojan horses but not enough to stiffle the growth of it.
It's often said that those on the right think those on the left are naive, while those on the left think those on the right are evil. From what I've gathered, in most clubs and on most websites, you can let leftists into the larger group, but you must scrupulously keep them away from any kind of power or authority the inner circles have.

You can have a reasonable debate with someone who thinks you don't understand the topic. You can't have a reasonable debate with someone who thinks you're just evil.
If it were a justified act, it would be named in plain English instead of such a blanket term. The Leftists knew that they had shit the bed by saying that their old favorites were "cancelled" and tried to take it back by insisting that they actually meant that the targets were "facing consequences for their actions." In a correct act of projection (because directionbrains really are the same), they announced that their enemies were also cancelling people for being women or extroverted. And somehow, even when vaunting their pattern recognition, the opposite end of that Bird decided, "yeah, I am going to agree with the behavior that they projected onto me".If you don't gatekeep to an extent, however, you end up being infiltrated and taken from the inside out like a virus or, well, The Thing.

Update on the Farms, Journalists still seething: The Register authors news article suggesting that people (specifically, KiwiFarmers) be put into 'deprogramming camps' where they can be 'detoxified of hate' - and they consider this a more likely, viable, and effective alternative to deplatforming then. No really. They mask it with "de-toxification" and weasel words about "resocialization" that would have made the USSR proud.
