I am surprised the old swine didn't use more British history for this, since ASoIaF is based on the Wars of the Roses.
Then again, Byzantine history is even more interesting and pun intended "byzantine".

Since GRRM world is parody of Western Europe,then making their past copy of Byzantine do not shock me at all.
Dude is not Tolkien after all.
To be honest,Conan with his"by Mithra" 'By Crom" was more oryginal.

He is sort of OK when idea and the start and the middle are concerned, the problem is that he shits the bed midway and can't end a story to save his fat, greedy ass.
Also, he can't, fucking can't stop self-inserting himself into stuff.
TBH I thought that Samwell Tarly would be the next king because he appeared to be his SI character, but then it turned out it was Bran, because stories and raven magic...

Don't forget that Tyrion too is a George Martin SI. But then again, Tolkien is guilty of that too: he wrote the entire "Beren and Luthien" story simply because he loved his wife so much; and of course, the entire race of Hobbits are literally JRR Tolkien's self-insert.

Book or the series version? Because book version has some nice moments, but also the moments of utter psychopathy.
Both versions are vile in different ways. Nigh irredeemable.

I always saw him as a Miles Vorkosigan clone born into a shitty medieval world, myself.
I know Martin is aware of the series, since he mentioned it at least one as a potential candidate for a Scifi tv show when he was discussing nuBSG's success.
Along with Honor Harrington.
Also, it fits since LMB has a ton of awards whileas fatso couldn't beat Harry Potter and only got the one after decades IIRC.
IIRC Miles was based on some other character according to Bujold.
