Kaiserliche Marine question - where did the enlisted men come from?
The Army had territorial recruitment, the men being called up to serve in their local regiment.
How did the Navy - which also was a "federal" and not "kingdom specific" institution - fill its berths? Was a specific quota of conscripts to be provided assigned to each Corps District?

BTW - how did one end up in the Schutztruppen? Were these "overtimers", i.e. men who did their 2 years in the Army and volunteered for another 5-8 years?

New question - did the Deutschland class heavy cruisers carry reloads for their torpedos?

I found answers for my last pair of questions elesewhere:
1 - the KM called up men with some contact with water - seamen, workers of river barges etc. regardless of area;
2 - the German privates in the ST were in small part "green" volunteers from amongst recruits, with the bulk volunteering for service while doing their service or immediately afterwards. Interestingly, enlistment times were very short - 2 years to 3 and a half.

I have a confession to make and this thread is probably the best place to make it. I've heard of BMP's and BTR's and even BMD's etc before to the point I could recognize the name but while I'm sure I heard of MT-LB's before... It never stuck around in my mind long enough to be retained in my noggins knowledge base I guess.

Until like February 2022 when both sides started losing dozens of them in loads or weird variants and it's like, "Oh these things have been around since the 50's. There's like thousands of them laying around."

Is the MT-LB just really overlooked in general or just me?

Anyone else have any similar experiences/revelations? Not strictly with the above but something similar?

It was originally an artillery tractor for heavy guns, but had enough space/power to make it useful for other things in a pinch.

Admiral Hipper class had reloads but no rails ... maybe those ships were simply large enough as not to need them?
The Hipper's spare torpedoes were held near aircraft handling cranes, in addition there appears to be a rail system for the torpedoes to be hung under, which leads to both sets of tubes.

They are the materialization of the concept of "boring but practical" of Soviet armored vehicles.
Anyone who plays decent cold war strategy games knows them.

It's like Warsaw Pact M-113, it can be used for pretty much anything.

Yeah I played (terribly) some WarGame: European Escalation back in the day but it's existence I guess was never relevant enough to sink into my long term memory. The M113 is definitely more distinctive in my mind, though I'm sure there are many reasons for that. Just made me ponder how unremarkably bland it must be. :p

An interesting thread on a Polish forum (with quite a few ex-military people) mentions that Soviet/Russian T-72 barrels "work as advertised" up to 200 APFSDS shots. Due to much lower MV HE/HEAT shells cause much less barrel damage, four such being equal to a single AT shot.
Of course it is possible to continue firing past the limit, now from a 128-129 mm or so calibre barrel and with longer chamber, but accuracy suffers. Hence it is likely that both sides may be in need of rebarreling their tanks. This might explain the Russians taking out T-62 from storage. Ukraine, with inflow of tanks in "internationalist aid", may be less affected.
Such bore and chamber expansion transcends political divisions and affects Western ordnance just as well.
It was forwarded that for firing HE in support of PBI T-55's may actually be a good solution. Not only saves the smoothbores for AT work but also rifles are more accurate in such work at medium and long ranges .

Yup, modern APFSDS run on absurd chamber pressures which erode even high-tech barrels. There's really not much you can do to alleviate it as well, aside from exotic material usage and having plenty of spares laying around.
I believe Russia and Ukraine have similar issues with their artillery pieces. They just weren't designed to throw this much stuff downrange without spares.

Anybody know of a good mug/buttshot (can be a drawing) of an Unryu class carrier?
All images I've found show them very much from the sides, yet what I'd like to see is how much the island and stacks are "sponsoned out", i.e. how much to they "intrude" on the hangar or not.
WARNING: Whip out out your mind bleach and rusty spoons
Something like this:

No, this is not a moving van, but the HIJMS Ryūjō

Late-war Japanese stuff tends to be almost impossible to find pictures of.
There's like...Two whole pictures of Shinano for example.
