WTF USA how?
>This means that about one in five U.S. adults (21%) have low literacy skills
Do we have comparative data for other countries? May as well be an IQ artifact.
Considering that average US IQ is 98, and assuming normal IQ distribution and that it's the dumbest people who are bad at reading, it would suggest that Americans with IQ below about 86 or so have low literacy skills... which seems completely obvious, as i don't think anyone has invented a trick to make even the stupid people highly literate.

well, there is a wikipedia chart that is very very out of date.
it shows varying rates. with top nations having 99%+

interestingly it shows usa as having 86% literacy, but does not specify the year.

this site is quite interesting:

> Percentage of persons 14 years old and over who were illiterate (unable to read or write in any language), by race and nativity: 1870 to 1979

1870 had 11.5% of whites, and 20% total illiterates in USA
this steadily improved until 1979 where the total was 0.6% illiterate.
But at some point started declining.

And we reached the 21% illiterates we are at today.
Found a government source for that 21% from 2012.
It somehow held steady at 21% all the way from 2012 to 2023 as per earlier source

Interestingly they 85% of them are native borns.
And racial spreadout is wide. 35% white, 23% black. 34% hispanic, and 8% other.

the only point of distinction is that for hispanics, most of the illiterates are migrants. while for all other races most of the illiterates were born and raised in the usa.

The keyword is definitions.
From your previous link:
This means that about one in five U.S. adults (21%) have low literacy skills, translating to about 43.0 million adults.
There is a difference between "low literacy skills" kind of illiterate and medieval peasant illiterate and also as brought up "illiterate in English but not in Spanish" illiterate.

The definitions are there in the articles.
Four in five U.S. adults (79 percent) have English literacy skills sufficient to complete tasks that require comparing and contrasting information, paraphrasing, or making low-level inferences—literacy skills at level 2 or above in PIAAC (OECD 2013). In contrast, one in five U.S. adults (21 percent) has difficulty completing these tasks (figure 1).
Medium literacy aka level 2 is being able to perform very basic tasks. "read this line and tell me in your own words what it means"
This is not some super advanced literacy, it is very basic stuff you expect a 7 year old to do.

Low literacy aka level 1 can't do this. they are defined as being functionally illiterate. sure they can probably read their own name, and maybe a couple of specific words.
But they can't really function in society (a definition typically used for level 1 and level 0 literacy people. in other articles, not that one)

Also 1870 USA was not medieval peasants.
also as brought up "illiterate in English but not in Spanish" illiterate.
85% of them are born in USA. Most are not Hispanic.

Lowkey the Bungie haters of the Destiny series kinda piss me off.

They complain about the story because it's not spoon fed to them but when it is they get insulted that they make it dumbed down.

These fucking idiots are acting like Lightfall is the final expansion of the series and are freaking out with their autistic screeching ignoring that the DLC is just an introduction to the Subclass

🤦‍♀️

Because it's always easier to kick your problems upstairs than to deal with them yourself, especially if there's every incentive to so so because racism or sexism or whatever.

Have you ever been to back woods Appalachia or the like?
it is really more blighted inner city areas from what I have seen over the rural portions of the country. in Baltimore saw a school that had a less than 10% able to read at grade level. these places have a terrible culture that has seeped in and figuring out how to deal with that is gonna be difficult.

You destroy the education system by abandoning it. We need to move away from public schools with populations and move to a neighborhood schools. There'll be a LOT of smaller schools, much closer to the kids. NO Federal involvement and governed by the local parents/community.

Plus, it's easier for a handful of parents to hold a small school accountable, than a school with thousands of students and hundreds of staff.

For most of subharah Africa this is true they have gone from tribal battle grounds to colonies to independent countries in a really fast amount of time.

As civilizations go they are young as fuck and have made an astounding amount of progress

Wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the Trans Insanity thread, but it might be more at home there.

Basically, a teacher groomed a kid into being "trans"; Subsequently, the nine year old girl wanted to kill herself.

The school knew about this teacher basically grooming and manipulating children. They did nothing at best, supported it at worst.

The parents, disgustingly enough, are on board with the agenda, but they're horrified that they were basically kept out of the loop, and that their kid didn't express any "gender dysphoria" (aka she was a normal kid until this groomer began to refer to her as "Leo") so it didn't apply to her.

To keep in line with the Sietch's rules, I'm not advocating violence. However, if someone were to walk up to this 'teacher' in the middle of the night and shank her in the kidney, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.
