So this is not good for Russia, particularly after losing the drydock.

It's not in the drydock (it sank) but in the port. Apparantely the welders didn't heed the safety regulations. At this point it would be probably best to scrap the bloody thing, it's just a money sink.

From the article:

After yet another incident, maybe the Russian Ministry of Defense will finally call it quits on the beleaguered vessel, but in doing so, they would leave the Russian Navy's sole carrier air wing without a ship to fly from.

They could always beach the ship, and turn it into a land airbase. :p

Here’s an idea... just have the Russians sell it to the US and the USN will be more than happy to use it for gunnery practice.

Edit: Preferably sold at a steep discount.

I would not at all be surprised if the Russians end up buying a new aircraft carrier from China.

They will buy components (like diesel engines for most of their new ships), but they will never buy entire ships from China. One of the reasons why they cling to this money sink is that they want to relearn the institutional knowledge that was lost in 90's.

The Russians were perfectly willing to buy amphibs from France. I wouldn’t rule out their also trying to build their own carrier to retain knowledge, but Russia has a long history of mixing foreign purchases and indigenous construction at the same time.

The Mistral purchase had more to do with Russia trying to get politically close to West (crazy, I know) and one of the ways to get nice with France was through the cheqbook. The fact that France was never shy about technology transfers also helps.
China does not have military technology Russia wants, so they don't need to buy whole items so the tech transfers could be authorised.
